I have some friends that are huge degenerate gamblers and they pitched in together to purchase a share of an actual race horse. Don’t think they are even close to getting their investment back.

Good friend's dad purchased a horse that ran at Fonner Park back in the mid-90's. They spent every weekend making the drive from Dawson to Hall county and back.
Right after they had inherited the farm and a bunch of money, but right before they remodeled their 1500 sqft house into a 4500 sqft house. Fast forward to 2004, and he's no longer a farmer, not living in that house, and instead working for the walmart distribution center in North Platte.
I'm not sure if it was the gambling or piss-poor management of money and the farm but it was a truly crazy fall from riches to "rags."
