I truly think moving transfer portal season to May, and May only is the best way to reign in this nonsense. Obviously all coaches would love to have their portal players here for the start of the second semester/spring ball, but at what expense?

Moving this to a spring only portal season would:

-slow down the assistant coach movement and actually give HC's time to get staffs set prior to portal season. I think this would curb assistant coaching movement until January/February.

-give schools a chance to evaluate early signing Freshman to see if portal guys are even needed at certain spots. Should give schools more of an evaluation window of where there are holes. I think it would re emphasize HS recruiting.

-give players more of a glimpse of what their role for the upcoming season will be as they have undergone spring practice with NEXT years team. Currently all of these guys are making a decision for next year, based off of the current years team and current years standing.

-bring some joy and importance back to the bowl season. Lets face it, the bowl games are trashed now. Moving the portal to the spring only ensures 1) rosters are more intact (maybe minus SR opt outs) and 2) the actual assistant coaching staffs are in tact and coaching there current teams.

1. Multiyear contracts for revenue sharing money with incentives
2. .??????
3. Profit
I do think contracts being tied to revenue sharing will help; but I think there is a lot more there than to the naked eye.

-I think schools are going to be reluctant to have contracts extend out too far because they’ll need to be able to cut the under performing guys.

-Admittedly I don’t have a full grasp of how this will work with athletes essentially being employees, but what happens when a guy gets kicked off of the team due to disciplinary issues; does he sue the school for voiding the contract? I think it’s going to be tough to manage these without a CBA or players union.

I imagine like any contract there are certain scenarios that void them.

I don't think schools want to get locked in long term on projects, but I'm reasonably confident that every HC in America wants more control over their roster than they have now and if that means you have to carry a bit of dead weight so be it. You don't need 105 dudes to play every week.

Now whether contracts can be brought about without a CBA, I don't know

Here's a start...

Football only
Sign from high school = 2 year minimum contract
Sign from portal = 2 year minimum contract, assuming he has enough eligibility remaining (if not, 1 year)
Sign from JUCO = 1 year minimum contract if you played 2 years at JUCO
Sign from JUCO = 2 year minimum contract if you played 1 year at JUCO
Grad transfers = 1 year minimum contract

IDGAF if a coach is fired, resigns, takes another job or dies - a player must fulfill their contract. Same for the school, regardless how bad of a player he ends up being in college. The only way someone is released of their contract is if they break University (team) rules. And flunking doesn't give the player an out, but it does a school.

If professional sports can have minimum requirements then so can the NCAA. Or whatever the next governing body is named.

We have to do something to give the schools some protection.

Honestly I feel like that’s pretty rational.
