Anybody here mess around with guitar? i think im going to take it up this winter while i have some extra free time, im a decent singer but have never really tried to start picking.

I’m sure lessons depend on the instructor but they were a waste for me.

What worked for me was learning chords and playing tabs until the muscle memory kicked in. I’m sure YouTube has some great tutorials.

Your fingers are gonna hurt for the first week. Play an acoustic and push through it.

Lots of good freebie lessons online. Do the basic boring stuff repeatedly and get good at it, it'll make everything else easier later.

I took guitar lessons as a kid but never stuck with it and can hardly play a lick today. However, I would definitely recommend starting with YouTube tutorials over taking actual lessons.

A lot of my friends from high school are really good musicians and even just seeing them be able to fuck around and play almost every instrument makes me wish I had taken music seriously. I’m hoping to get my son into piano lessons in a few years.

Disagree about YouTube lessons. In person instructor is definitely worth it if you are motivated. Will progress way faster and less likely to form bad habits.

The absolute best way is to eventually find a group of guys who will let you sit in with them to jam once you learn some chords. Playing with musicians who are better than you will exponentially increase your playing ability.

I’ve played guitar/bass for almost 2/3rds of my life now. Focus mainly on bass nowadays though.

I played in touring metal bands for several years.

I learned guitar by learning how to read guitar tabs and learning what notes they were as I could already read music then just started translating it to the sheet music.

As far as techniques and skills go I learned by watching a ton of music videos and live videos of the songs I liked and figured most things out.

If you want to be good, get lessons.

If you’re doing it for fun. Make a plan, find YouTube videos you like. Pick out 10 songs you really like and then find tabs for them.

Play those songs until you hate them. You’ll be just fine.

I gave up trying to teach myself.

at least once a year for like the last ten years I have tried teaching myself and nothing.

Watch old videos of this guy and do what he does and you will be just fine -

Yeah I guess I would qualify my recommendation for the Youtube approach with "i assume you're not looking to sell the farm and become a touring musician"

Maybe add Rocksmith, too. The new version is an online subscription, but the old version is a regular app you can pirate all the DLC for.

Is this what you attribute your sexual prowess to?
