Georgia Southern opened its 2022 season with a 59-7 rout of Morgan State in the Eagles' opener under first-year head coach Clay Helton.
Georgia Southern totaled 504 yards of offense last week, rushing for 137 yards and completing 29-of-46 passes for 367 yards. Three Eagles had at least 35 rushing yards and a touchdown. OJ Arnold led the way with 45 yards and a touchdown, followed by Gerald Green with 44 yards and a score and Jalen White with 35 yards and two touchdowns. Kyle Vantrease, who transferred from Buffalo, completed 29-of-46 passes for 367 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. Sam Kenerson caught seven passes for 99 yards, while Khaleb Hood had six catches for 88 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Eagles limited Morgan State to 12 first downs and 250 yards of offense. The Georgia Southern defense allowed only 78 passing yards. Todd Bradley-Glenn led the stingy defensive effort with seven tackles, including one tackle for loss. Najee Thompson and Marques Watson-Trent had five tackles apiece, while Isaac Walker tallied the Eagles' lone sack in the season opener.
ABOUT CLAY HELTON
Clay Helton is in his first season with Georgia Southern, with a 1-0 record with the Eagles. Helton is 47-24 overall in his sixth year as a head coach.
Prior to taking over at Georgia Southern, Helton spent 12 seasons at USC, including the final six seasons as head coach where he posted a 46-24 record with the Trojans. Helton was the first USC head coach to have 10-win seasons in each of his first two full seasons, and he had more wins (21) in his first two full seasons than any other USC coach. He led USC to a 13-game winning streak from 2016 to 2017.
The 50-year-old Helton has coached for the past 28 seasons with stops at USC (2010-21), Memphis (2000-09), Houston (1997-99) and Duke (1995-96).
Clay Helton has never faced Nebraska as a head coach and Nebraska and Georgia Southern are meeting for the first time on Saturday. He has faced the Huskers once in his career as an assistant coach, serving as USC's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in the Trojan's 45-42 win over Nebraska in the 2014 Holiday Bowl.
Helton played quarterback at the college level at Auburn (1990-92) and Houston (1993-94). Helton is a graduate of the University of Houston.
