If we were at 88 players who had/have scholarships with the additions of Nate and Bullock, and we know that we can take a couple more, there is plenty of people above that can get the NIL package and keep us at 85.

A couple thoughts

1. I don't think Gunnerson could come off schollie even though he graduates - he has only been a student 3 years, and I think the minimum they can give him is four years of scholarship

2. There are several other guys who graduated previous to 2023 (info either from the roster or their transfer portal news coverage): Bleekrode, Buschini, Ortiz, Henrich, Kemp, Fleeks. They could be added to the list.

3. I understand the school is cautious about taking players who know they will get heavy PT minutes off scholarship. This is in the wake of volleyball player Keonilei Akana's transfer to Texas. Even if they are made whole with additional NIL, some players prefer that people see them as on scholarship. So if the player feels that way, and could retire or leave, the school likely won't ask them to walk-on if they are significant contributors. If, on the other hand, the school feels comfortable saying, "we won't offer you a scholarship to stay but you can walk-on", they would have no problem doing this. The guys in between those two ends of the spectrum could be difficult.

I think we were "officially" at 90 after adding NB and JB, excluding the two unofficial retirements from players who haven't graduated and are unwilling to transfer. Because we are entertaining guys at the open camp for portal guys, Jucos, and HS grads without teams, I am guessing we have at least two available schollie, which suggests at least five guys from this list are retiring or walking on (I am italicizing guys I wouldn't expect them to ask to walk-on because they are likely to be significant contributors). I think this seems to ID the likely guys fairly well.

Unless he wants to wait to play until fall 2024. He would have had to enter the portal by May 1 as a post-graduate student to be eligible by the fall. They picked May 1 because most grad schools would have processed your fall application and admitted you by then. (I'm sure a football program could pull strings if you decided to come later, but obviously they were trying to eliminate this and let people get immediate eligibility when there was at least a colorable argument it was an academic decision instead of a bag of money).

this coming year is his 4th in college so I would guess a year from now, but also could be two years from now, especially given he has transferred.
