Finally after so long we looked like a fucking football team. We actually looked like we were playing the right sport. Was it perfect? Nope. Can we be better? Yes! Was it a step in the right direction? Fuck yeah. Some observations.
1: The team had the right energy. I credit this to Mickey. MJ was the exact right example. He was encouraging them, coaching them and had the proper body language for a leader. He wasn't standing there looking dejected like Scott Fraud did all too often. He also didn't waste his time chasing referees up and down the sideline barking at them about something that happened 3 plays ago. (Another SF hallmark) Players take on the demeanor of their head man and our young, fragile team needs what Mickey offers in that regard.
2: We didn't wilt when Indiana showed some life in the 2nd quarter. We all know a Scott coached team would have shit the bed when they tied the game.
3: Special teams put us in a position to win for a change. A blocked punt for 7 points is the obvious one. But our punter pinned them deep few times in the 3rd quarter and limited what they could do offensively. Trey Palmer also returned a few for positive yardage. When was the last time we had that?
4: Running plays, while not many huge gains, were almost always positive for 5-10 yards. Indiana didn't hit us behind the line much and Grant churned out positive play after positive play. OL did what it needed even missing some dudes.
5: Speaking of missing a dude, I'm not mad at Turner Corcoran for his first unnecessary roughness. For the first time this year an OL guy didn't let the other team bully us. He actually showed some fight when the IU D did some bullshit. Now, the second one was stupid and unneeded, so let's learn when, eh TC?
6: We actually played defense. 11 guys all trying to contribute. Examples: Tipped passes at the line, pass breakups, contested catches. We didn't see those things in the first 4 games. We had guys making Indiana earn everything they got. Add in the sacks and pressures we were able to create and their QB ended up having a difficult game.
7: Young dudes stepped up. I see you Malcom Hartzog and Jimari Butler. Exactly what this team needs, some guys to perform when their number is called. Irvin has in the past two games as well. Gifford is out there making plays too.
Extra: Lord Brewington of House Go Fuck Yourself did what he does. Man I'm gonna miss him.
