Been an issue during Frost's tenure, but after tracking it last year and this year I didn't realize how bad it actually was.
For reference:
We're one of the worst in the country at winning the field position battle and it costs us an incredible amount of hidden yardage every game.
@ Purdue we were -7.15 in net avg. field position (Our avg. SFP was 26.69, Purdue's was the 33.85). They essentially started every drive with a 7 yard advantage. a 93 yard total difference.
@ Rutgers we were -9.43 in net avg. field position (24.79 to 34.21). a 132 yard difference. Very lucky to win that game.
Not sure what can be done to improve in this area, but we're not good enough to gift the opponent a free 4 yards on every single drive. And how much better would be if we had the 4 yard advantage every drive?
Avg. Starting Field Position | Opponent Avg. Starting Field Position | Net Avg. Field Position
Huskers 2022 | 25.84 | 29.71 | -3.87 |
Huskers 2021 | 25.76 | 28.44 | -2.69 |
For reference:
Top 10 Nationally | Top 40 Nationally | 100th or worse nationally
Avg. Starting Field Position | 32.1 | 30.2 | 27.3 |
Opponent Avg. Starting Field Position | 26 | 28.1 | 30.8 |
Net Avg. Field Position | 5.2 | 1.6 | -2.7 |
