After last night's demolition (which was the worst bowl loss ever), 63% of College Football Playoff games have been decided by a margin of victory of 17 or more points. 26% have been decided by 28 or more points. It's kinda stunning. There has never been a Playoff that featured 3 good close games.

Obviously the genie will never go back into the bottle, but is the Playoff actually resulting in a better product than the old bowl system? Is it creating better football matchups, or more entertainment value? And will expanding the playoff help?

BONUS POST: There is a Twitter account called @BCSKnowHow that runs the old BCS computer rankings for fun. Based on what would have been the final 2022 BCS rankings, and the old bowl affiliations, the BCS bowl season most likely would have looked something like this:

National Championship: Georgia vs. Michigan

Rose Bowl: Ohio State vs. Utah

Sugar Bowl: Alabama vs. USC

Fiesta Bowl: KSU vs. Tennessee

Orange Bowl: Clemson vs. TCU

Would that have been a more entertaining/meaningful/better product for the end of the college football season?

Well, just over a week ago we had two of the greatest postseason games ever.

This year was a bit of an anomaly in the matchup because of the TCU upset.

Everybody knew TCU was on paper the 4th best team. If they had played this game in the first round, we would have increased our chances of a decent title game (imagine that OSU-Georgia game being played last night).

I agree with the people who think that a 12 team playoff has the chance of distributing talent more evenly, ultimately making these games better.

It also likely would’ve eliminated TCU earlier, leaving better teams for the finale.

We would have lost out on those semi-final games which made for an amazing day of football. The final sucked, but I wouldn't have changed it for watching those 2 games.
Yeah that was a blast! It's just interesting to wonder if the old bowl system could've given us just as many games with that entertainment value because they would all be great matchups that were still be considered "big games" too.

Biggest reason to not expand the playoff.

We have enough games.

I saw a ticktok video ranking every single CFP game and it blew my mind how many blow outs there were.

dumbfuck Michigan OC cost them this year. Of course giving TCU 2 pick sixes didn't help and UM still almost won the game.

TCU had to play the best game of their year and Michigan had to play the worst game of their year. Both happened. TCU still only won by single digits.

Ohio St is the team who should be kicking themselves. They should have beaten Georgia and today would be their day.

Get rid of conference title games and use other bowls as the first round of playoffs. Do 12 teams with the top 4 seeds getting byes. Don't worry about conference tie ins cause 12 teams will get all the good Power 2 teams and the best mid majors.

In a dream world, cut the schedule to 11 and play the NIT of college football for 13-29

I understand the general point, but if you look at the FCS and their playoffs (24 teams), since 2011 (random year, but when NDSU started their domination):

0-8 points (1 possession): 4 games
9-16 points (2 possessions): 3 games
Greater than 17 points: 5 games

So, it doesn't necessarily seem like a larger playoff is going to lead to more competitive title games. It seems to be a lot more about the matchups, talent, and mistakes, just like all other football games. TCU shouldn't have been in that game last night, but Michigan decided to give them the game. Hell, you could easily argue Georgia shouldn't have been in the game last night, but OSU pissed that game down their leg at the end.
