He does. That's why if you look at his Illini seasons since he was hired, the Nebraska game is often their most spirited game of the season. It's because Bert gets them fired up for the Nebraska game more than any other game they play. You can test this theory by watching Illinois vs Purdue, Maryland, MSU, etc. They play those games like they're hungover, make a ton of mistakes, etc.

Bert actually said the NU game in 2023 was his singlemost frustrating game in his entire coaching career. He absolutely despises NU.

This is why the spread this week made no sense. They always play us like it’s a rivalry game for them & Bert was PISSED losing last yr to our pathetic misfit toys team
He hung in there against us, frustrated us & eventually shoved it up our asses in the end
There DL hadn’t played that well all yr & ours was god awful
& don’t look now CU but CU is 3-1. We just need to take the approach of going single coverage & committing everything to stop the run & be disciplined on play action
We came in thinking we could just keep things in front of us & they dinked & dunked us all night. Eventually we got frustrated & started to panic once we got worn out defensively
