The year was 1989 and Tom Osborne was entering his 17th season leading the Cornhuskers.
They finished the season going 10-2, finishing the season ranked #11 in the AP and finished runner-ups in the Big 8 conference. They did open the season ranked #4 and started 8-0 till they faced there first ranked opponent in #2 Colorado which they lost a nail biter in Boulder, 27-21. After that lost they dropped down to #6 (was #3) and would finish the regular season untouched.
They went on to face #5 Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl and got boat raced 41-17.
Nebraska did had 4 All-Americans on that team: Doug Glaser, Jake Young, Reggie Cooper and Ken Clark.
Although he wasn’t an All-American they also had the Big8 Player of the Year in Gerry Gdowski and Big 8 Defensive Freshman of the Year Tyrone Byrd.
They had the #2 Scoring Offense that season putting up 42.4/ppg and the #21 Scoring Defense allowing 17.9/ppg. There strength of schedule that season was ranked #67.
Gdowski did put up over 1,300 passing yards and 19 touchdown passes along with only 2 interceptions. Along with 900+ rushing yards and 13 scores on the ground.
Ken Clark had almost 1,200 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. Leodis Flowers did finish with the third most touchdowns on the team with 7.
Reggie Cooper finished with a team high 4 interceptions and also had the team’s lone punt return touchdown. Freshman Tyrone Byrd had 3 interceptions.
Andre Ware was the Heisman Trophy winner that year with Houston after putting up almost 4,700 passing yards and 46 touchdowns.
