Game Thread CARDIAC BEAVER SLAYERS VS. INDIANA - WEEKEND SERIES - GAME 3 - SUNDAY - 12:00 PM - Big+

I am curious to what went into the decision to pick Blachowicz (sp?) to come out of the rotation. I certainly want Katskee in the rotation, but why specifically him? I thought he'd been pitching well too.

My hunch is Rob has favorites

That being said, Gavin is of course a really good Sunday option.

You look at the 4 starters:
- Ty...well he's proven from last year and hopefully he'll go deeper into games as the year wears on like last year
- Carson...maybe last week was a sign of things to come? If his control is better, he's got the best stuff and would be lights out. Wish he had a faster delivery to the plate tho with runners on.
- Cooper...best "pitcher" on the team. Knows how to hit spots, hits the zone constantly, can go deep into games, etc.
- Gavin...definitely a good pitcher, misses bats pretty well and throws strikes (#2 in k's on the team, 2nd lowest bb/9). The only knock I think you have on him is build/size/raw talent. He doesn't fit the 'mold' of a dominant pitcher. He does hit people probably too much and uncorks some wild pitches more than you'd like.

EDIT: here's a couple other stats
PitcherK/9BB+HBP/9Opp OBP
Ty9.65.4.341
Carson13.95.6.328
Cooper11.92.1.188
Gavin11.95.1.310

So, which one do you leave off? I think it comes down to Carson and Gavin at least. Do you go with talent/arm/size/potential or do you go with the guy who's been more consistent?

I can buy either argument.

P.S.

Rob rightfully gets some critique for some head scratching moves (and pitch calls) but...

3.09 ERA across 4 starters is something I would have absolutely taken to start the season.

Barring injury, this could be a bigger move where eventually Cooper becomes our Friday guy. So get him on a weekend schedule now, where we could limit a pitch count when needed to bump him a day sooner.

Honestly, I'm a little shocked. I thought for certain we would have Katskee available in the pen this weekend (Friday) so he could start on Tuesday.

Honestly, I liked him alot coming into the year, but I think I'd have gone with Ty coming out of the rotation here. He just hasn't done anything to instill confidence in me. At least Jasa and Blac have had some "flashy" games.

I agree on your ERA point too.

Added this to my post, but here's some additional stats:

NOTE: I had to calculate Opp OBP. Basically I just took the hits/avg to get the # of ABs faced, then added in HBP and BB to the hits to get the OBP. That's at least close. It doesn't factor in SFA's but it's in the neighborhood.

Cooper's Opp OBP is insane. Elite elite.

Yes, but they're (weekend rotation) not even averaging 5 innings per start. That's not good, so the bullpen has actually done a good job of limiting inherited runners from scoring. Or, Rob is making changes quicker than the previous 2 seasons.

Horn has a 2.1-1 K/BB (brutal, especially for a Friday guy)
Jasa has a 2.8-1 K/BB (not good for any weekend spot)
Blach has a 4.1/1 K/BB (very respectable)

Ty & Carson's numbers are horrible for SP's and Blach's is very good.

Ty & Carson's runners/inning aren't that good either. Too much traffic, and it's because of the BB's.

You're not getting much of an argument with me. I have agreed all season they need to go deeper into games.

Blach's numbers go down a bit when you add in HBPs tho (same as a BB really).

More to it than performance. This will be an important week and the news could swing our chances big either way.

To your point, even the players know Horn is the worst of the 4

fingers crossed.

Side note, the Auburn starts really hurt the starters IP/Start.

Blach has some tightness. Losing him would set us back this year as well as next.
