Anyone notice this jersey number switch? Anyone hear an explanation? Can’t imagine Butler got his single digit taken.

The single digit thing is the one thing I don’t love in Rhule World, call me a curmudgeon but I wouldn’t mind if this was the first domino to fall to eventually phase it out haha
I look at as a way to keep the locker room happy. It's stupid but so many dudes want the single digit jerseys that this way the guys who want them and don't get them can't claim favoritism or any other BS like that.

Shavers getting the 1 is more noteworthy than Butler getting 10 back, imo. Figured with Rhule's use of single digits Shavers wouldn't simply get it in a swap but maybe he did

I like it. Single digits are the "cool" ones and to give it to your toughest guys breeds a competition of toughness, which is greatly needed in this league.

Does it breed competition? If being the toughest is the standard, I would imagine there should be times where non-starters get them. Doubt that ever happens.
My biggest gripe is that all the best players will be 0-9 now, so how will you ever retire a number if you need to? It’ll be a little boring every year to have the best players be 0-9. When I see a 22 Nebraska jersey I think of Rex. It just won’t be the same.

Well when Tommi comes back, Hartzog will still be 7. And there was one or two guys last year, I'm too drunk to remember who, that were not starters. I do think, at least with Rhule, there's a factor of toughness that goes into deciding starters, so that does kinda go hand in hand.

Yeah I also think it’s very very dumb

Toughest doesn't always mean best.

I’m aware but we have 2 years of evidence now and it’s almost always been the best players.
Maybe because we had tough players and Frost didn't develop anyone that talented IE: they mostly left.

Look at Barney. Not a single digit. Best athlete on the offense.

Exactly. Imagine Frazier being #15 and then switching to #3 halfway through his career, Ahman Green being #30 and then switching to #6, Rex Burkhead being #22 and then... also ending up #6. Grant Wistrom being #98 and then switching to #4… ya know what I mean? Plus like you said, with so many guys over the years choosing from the same small number of jersey numbers it just ends up feeling LESS special.

I love the competition aspect and honoring these guys, I just wish there was another way. Even something small but meaningful, like the 10 guys getting to have their hometown area code on their helmet or something (like Frost did for the whole team and then took away for some reason). That would allow OL to get the honor too.

I agree with those saying it's not their favorite thing about the Rhule regime.

I just it never crossed my mind that having a single digit number was somehow cooler than not, so I balked a bit when I was told it would be a big reward because everyone wants these prestigious single-digit numbers. Another factor is if I already had my number, a double-digit number I've worn since junior high, I would not want to change to a new number. I'd say, thanks, but I'm sticking with "my" number. Looks like Butler thinks the same.
