Huskers Surge Past Mavericks

Lincoln - Callin Hake tied a career high with 17 points, while adding six assists to help No. 24 Nebraska roll to an 87-35 women's basketball win over Omaha on Tuesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

With the victory, the Huskers improved to 10-0 and tied the third-longest winning streak in school history by extending a school-record stretch of scoring 80 or more points for the 10th consecutive game.

Hake caught fired from long range in the second quarter with 14 points, including four three-pointers, as Nebraska surged to a 46-22 halftime lead. For the game, Hake finished 6-of-10 from the floor, including 5-of-9 from long range, while dishing out six assists with no turnovers and adding two steals.

After the senior guard from Victoria, Minn., fueled Nebraska's first half, junior Jessica Petrie carried the Huskers to a big third quarter. The 6-2 forward from Gold Coast, Australia, scored 10 in the period on her way to 14 in the game. She hit two three-pointers to open the quarter after getting a pair of blocked shots on the defensive end. She added seven rebounds on the night to help Nebraska outscore the Mavs 22-8 in the third.

Fellow forward Amiah Hargrove rounded out three Huskers in double figures with 11 points, while just missing a double-double with nine rebounds. She added three assists, no turnovers and a pair of steals.

Three Huskers - Petra Bozan, Britt Prince and Logan Nissley - each contributed eight points in a balanced effort for the Big Red, as 11 players found the scoring column and 10 grabbed at least one rebound.

Nebraska tied a season high with 13 three-pointers while attempting a school-record 40 threes on the night against Omaha's triangle-and-two and box-and-one defenses. The Huskers hit 46.1 percent (35-76) of their shots from the floor overall and won the rebounding battle, 41-36, while dominating in turnover margin, 31-11. The Huskers also matched their season high with 17 steals against the Mavs. Nebraska also shared the ball well with 29 assists.

The Big Red held Omaha to 33.3 percent (15-45) shooting, including just 1-of-18 threes (.056).

Nebraska's halfcourt man-to-man defense locked down the Mavs in the second half, holding Omaha to just 13 second-half points, including five in the fourth quarter.

Omaha jumped to a quick 10-3 lead in the first 3:30, before Nebraska answered with a 10-point run that included four points from Hargrove and three-pointers by Hake and Kennadi Williams, who also finished the night with six assists and no turnovers. Williams' three-pointer gave NU its first lead at 13-10 with just under four minutes left in the opening quarter.

Nebraska took a 20-15 lead to the second quarter and pushed the margin to double digits for the first time on a Nissley three with six minutes left. Hake then sank three straight threes around a traditional three-point play by Eliza Maupin to give NU its first 20-point edge at 41-21 with 2:47 left in the half.
