Markowski, Potts Power Huskers Past Jaguars

Lincoln - Alexis Markowski and Natalie Potts combined for 39 points and 18 rebounds to power Nebraska's potent inside game, as the No. 21 Huskers worked their way to an 84-58 women's basketball win over Southern at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Tuesday night.

Nebraska improved to 3-0 with the win while the Jaguars slipped to 0-4 with their third road loss to an AP Top 25 opponent.

Markowski led the Big Red with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. The 6-3 senior center from Lincoln also connected on 4-of-7 free throws, while six rebounds, a pair of assists and a steal in 22 minutes of action.

Potts provided another impressive performance with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to notch her first double-double of the season and sixth of her career. The 6-2 sophomore forward from O'Fallon, Mo., hit 5-of-9 shots, including a three-pointer, while going 6-of-8 at the free throw line.

Senior transfer Alberte Rimdal added a second straight double-figure scoring performance with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. The 5-9 guard from Koge, Denmark, also hit 3-of-4 free throws while grabbing three rebounds.

In all, 11 Huskers found the scoring column on the night, including six points apiece from Britt Prince, Petra Bozan and Kendall Moriarty, while Logan Nissley added five points. All 12 Huskers contributed at least one rebound, as Nebraska controlled the glass, 46-26, including a plus-17 margin in the second half.

Nebraska took a 15-13 lead to the second quarter by shutting out Southern for the final five minutes of the first period and ending the quarter on a 4-0 run.

The Big Red grew the lead to double digits for the first time at 38-28 at halftime by closing the second quarter on an 8-0 run, shutting out the Jaguars for the final 1:45 of the half.

Nebraska's lead extended to 61-43 after three quarters, as the Huskers closed the period with another 8-0 run in the final three minutes.

For the game, Nebraska hit 49.1 percent (27-55) of its shots from the field, including 5-of-14 threes (.357). The Huskers also outscored the Jaguars 25-6 at the free throw line, by hitting 25-of-36 attempts (.694).

NU held Southern to 37.3 percent (22-59) from the floor, but knocked down 8-of-21 threes (.381), while connecting on 6-of-10 free throws. Aniya Gourdine led the Jaguars with 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 4-of-6 three-pointers. She also committed seven of Southern's 15 turnovers. Soniyah Reed added eight points on a pair of three-pointers, while Aleighya Fontenot managed seven points but went just 2-of-11 from the floor and 1-of-7 from three-point range.

Nebraska takes to the road for the first time during the regular season when the Huskers clash with South Dakota in Sioux Falls on Saturday, Nov. 16. Tip time between the Big Red and the Coyotes is set for 7 p.m. (CT) at the Sanford Pentagon.
