I guess it depends on the neighborhood. We had a very active social neighborhood when i first moved back to Nebraska from Georgia in ‘94. Newer development, so we were all working our way up the ladder, had wives & kids, similar ages, etc. Lotta good memories and lifelong friendships from those days.

Did the acreage thing for a decade after that. Social happenings weren’t as organic and had to be planned more. We put in a pool and that seemed to be a good reason to get together, grill some meat and socialize.

Sold that, moved back into town to a different neighborhood and it’s more of a mix of retirees and growing families. It’s less social, though the events we have pieced together have been well attended.

I mostly attend just to tell wildly inappropriate jokes, mostly because I enjoy making people laugh. And nobody tells jokes anymore. It’s a dying art.

I think it depends on the neighborhood. We live in a neighborhood that has a great mix of age ranges and 225 houses and we get about 150-200 people there.

We have a live band, catering, everyone brings a dessert, bounce houses for the kids, face painting, balloons, etc.

The adults all bring coolers and there's a few fire pits and some last well into the evening.

I look forward to it every year honestly.

But I can certainly imagine some neighborhoods don't do a lot to make it more fun.

I've never been to a block party or lived on a block that had one.

When I was a kid, my parents would host a neighborhood Christmas party where the neighbors (almost all elderly) would sit around and talk for a couple hours.

Hope this helps.

I have good neighbors. It's a small group of younger (under 60) people in the neighborhood. We've had a few get togethers.

I usually drink too much and say something my wife is pissed off about the next day though. One time the conversation was about fraternities they were in. I laughed every time the one guy said he was a Beta. He was confused why I was laughing.

Anything worse in the world than these. Highlife of the night so far is throwing these things called “funky flames” into the fire pit to change colors. Also a neighbor calling the police because a car drove to fast through the cul-de-sac.

Only good thing is my neighbor owns a brewery so free beer.

It’s a boomer thing. They love to sit around and talk about all of little Johnny’s participation trophy’s, Deb’s potluck lunch she had at work last week, why the garbage was late on Tuesday, etc all while drinking half iced down beer and shitty barefoot wine in someone’s garage. Sounds absolutely terrible if you ask me.

I’m very cordial with my neighbors but don’t think I’ve ever talked to any of them for more than 5 minutes, don’t need to know anyone’s life story just because we happen to live on the same street.

This. It's exactly why I live in the country on my own acreage. I get enough of that shit at work.

Block parties in the summer are a regular occurrence in Brooklyn, and they're pretty big affairs. There's usually a DJ, a bounce house for the kids, and several BBQs. This year, we had a pickleball court. There are also usually a few stoop sales going on. They block off the street and prohibit parking on the block for the day. They're a lot of fun. Bed-Stuy Brooklyn knows how to party.

oh god, we have a neighborhood facebook group that I check in on every once in awhile... just embarrassing. A good block party is like the antidote to shit like that haha.
