Staff on the USF On3 board said Hartline may have made the change because he had a rep of being a very poor recruiter at Nebraska.
(That raises the possibility we may have effed him - deservedly - but that is 100% speculation, not fact-based)
He doesn’t have to recruit with all the extra personnel
There's a few problems with Gary as a DC in this era. His scheme is notoriously difficult. he's an old school hardass tough coach and bro has not called a defense in 5 years.
But hey. Let USC hire him and fail. It's definitely fun to think about what he could do after a few years with USC type talent.

KC let him go & went from a 15-2 Super Bowl team to a 6-11 cellar dweller. Might be the most valuable coach in the NFL.

This could still happen - I would think they'd let Gary Patterson announce it if it does happen.
I've been pretty doom and gloom lately, I'm not as doom and gloom about this. Ekeler just doesn't stay in one place for longer than a year or two. It's obviously an Ekeler thing more than a Nebraska or Rhule thing.
It sucks, he did an awesome job. I think trying to replace him with Josh Martin is definitely a choice but I don't think it's the end of the world like I do the DL talent acquisition.
