If we can do it in basketball we can do it in football too.

Fred has taken a similar path to Matt Rhule.

-highly respected college coach before coming to DONU.

-failed in the pros before coming to DONU.

-struggled in the first several years at DONU. Maybe a result of some bad decisions (Matty A was a cancer and so was Dylan).

Fred got rid of his cancer and turned it around. Rhule has gotten rid of his cancer. Now he will turn it around.

We will be back.

I am getting strong Matt Abdelmassih/Bryce McGowens vibes coming out of the backend of this journey.

Rhule made a move to get the "program changer." Bryce wasn't a bad kid, similarly to Dylan not being a bad kid either. But Abdelmassih was poison to the program, trying to control things - just like Dom.

How many people were clamoring for Hoiberg to be canned? He made a mistake that set the program back a bit, but he was also willing to make the changes needed and righted the ship.

This is where Rhule is at right now. Sucks that we "wasted" years with the Raiola's, but 1) no one could blame Rhule for making the decision that he did at the time with Dylan and 2) the program is still in way better shape than it was 4 years ago when he took it over.

Without the burden of Raiola, Rhule can finally build the team his way.
I agreed with you back on January 3rd lol

I didn't want to start a new thread to post this, but this is just a really well written story on Nebraska basketball and Indiana football .......

Much easier to do it in basketball when you only need a couple pieces. Combine that with one of your starters being the coaches son, your probable Freshman of the Year in the conference being from Lincoln, and you really just need to find a few pieces.

Hoiberg did a great job putting this roster together, that's for sure.

Just to play devils advocate, I’d argue the path to adding talented football players has never been easier for NU since the heyday.

NU chooses not to “overpay” and be in the LSU/TTU/Oregon type market but if they wanted to they’d be able to attract higher end talent at a high clip. There are enough examples of teams that weren’t having national championship level success that have committed to that type of spending and elevated their programs - my biggest issue with football is they seemingly are choosing the harder path which is still doable but requires more patience and work

I agree, I guess my point was more that the quantity makes where you can get things rolling quicker if you hit on a couple. You just have to hit on so many more for football, and we won't have 40% of our guys contributing from Nebraska on football like basketball.

I had this same conversation two weeks ago. The key is the self awareness needed by the head coach to make the needed changes in staff, roster management and philosophy. I hope Rhule is making the right changes needed.

Yeah that makes sense. Also depends on where we set the “bar” for being competitive - I’d think NU could probably build a top 25 team with a competitive chance at the CFP every few years with a decent number of Nebraska players on it (not 40% of the roster but maybe 4-8 per class) when pairing with the right high end portal acquisitions but I don’t think they could do anything more than that without adding more guys from the traditional hot beds

It is simply de jeur, for Nebraska fans to hate on Mitch Sherman ...... but the man can write. Here is a national story he did in the Atlantic about NU basketball.
The Athletic*; Now if Nebraska goes undefeated and wins the natty, they might get an article in the Atlantic.

In Fred's defense his pro "failure" was largely the result of bringing his pace and space offense to Chicago and getting saddle with Wade and Rondo who shoot like Jim after a lobotomy

I’d be shocked if Wagler from Illinois doesn’t win B1G freshman of the year

He’s a cool story too. Was under the radar like Frager, from KC, brad underwoods son found him at an AAU tourney scouting a different player
