This is not a very hot take when Rhule essentially said this during his Post-Bowl Game presser...
You could make a strong case for Michigan St and UCLA being losses without EJ. Michigan St mostly because of the weather that day not allowing much of anything through the air mixed with very timely impact plays by EJ. EJ also stabilized us vs Maryland when things were reeling. Strong possibility we are not in position to win there without him.

I actually didn't listen to the presser. I typically do. Appreciate you recalibrating the opinion for me.
I am not going to go back to find it because I can't remember if it was the recruiting day presser or another - but I am 90% sure that Rhule stated both as reasons why our HS recruiting was so light this year.
I thought it was two fold, young roster + "gives more room/ability to address some areas of need in the portal" is what I recall. Could be a bit of a Mandela effect though.
Mendoza was a top 2-3 portal qb last year. Was always expected to be in draft convos

I know I’m being negative. I probably need to log off. The way I view Nebraska’s operation is they aren’t swimming in the deep end.
Nebraska talks like they want to play with the big kids. But they don’t spend like they do. Right now there are at least 15 programs I could name that operate trying to win a national championship.
Nebraska is not one of them.

Well I named 18 instead of 15.
And you can bet that Florida St and Clemson will be back in that game very soon. BYU may also land on that list.
That’s not 18 teams that are currently a contender but the 18 teams that actually try to do it not just say they are going to do it. By acquiring elite talent.
Now we hear all the time now that Nebraska doesn’t have Cignetti and they don’t have oil money like Tech.
Well what about Oklahoma? They’ve figured it out. Ole Miss has never won an SEC championship game and they are in the semifinals. Are they flush with cash and Nebraska is not?
If that’s the case then just say that and we can all lower our expectations. But we are told that Nebraska wants to win championships and we are seeing them acquire talent that doesn’t match that.
Which one of these teams would you say Nebraska has comparatively deeper financial pockets? Maybe Auburn or Miami?

1: Did you think Indiana would do good or bad in this year's portal?
2: Did you think TTU would do good or bad in this year's portal?
3: Did anybody expect Nebraska to do better than TTU and Indiana 48 hours into portal season?
So far, everything that has happened makes total sense to me. I did not expect top level future NFL dudes to be hot to join Nebraska. I do except those guys to land at places like Indiana and TTU. Those are hot destinations right now.
If you did think stud players would have a hard dick to be N, I have to ask, why would you believe that? And don't give me some quote by Rhule from a press conference. He has to say stuff like that. Promoting and exaggerating is part of the job. Your job as a critical thinker is to understand and see through the fog. Some of the stuff he said about money and the portal was literally hours after signing his extension. What was he gonna say?

I think it's a chicken or egg question. We have support but some amount of that support is reluctant to spend their money directly compensating HS and College kids.
Another side of this is a segment that "wants to see it" before they spend i.e. show me you can compete at a high level with what you have.
On another side is a facet that say Rhule has every resource available, is not hampered by monetary limitations, has never been told no, and Dannen has no control over him.
Then there's Rhule's want to be a good steward with the resources he has (I believe that to be genuine) and reward players on the existing roster before spending big on HS and transfer players.
Finally, there's Rhule's confirmation that money won't be the reason we don't sign a guy we want in the transfer portal.
There's probably other sides to consider but those are the biggest narratives I've heard over the past few years and it all creates some kind of polygon that I can't square.
Time will tell, but I think it's a good move for both. Hoover looked pretty good at times this year. Had very similar numbers to Mendoza before going to Indiana.

Also, if Raiola didn't get hurt, we'd probably beat USC and either Penn St or Cockeye.
I don't think anyone expected any of those things. I think what people expect is to start signing some of the guys we're bringing in, as other teams are clearly already doing the same. Did anyone expect Okie state to sign one of the top qbs and rbs in the portal? Oh wait, they followed their HC. Did we think we might get a similar shot with some of the SDSU guys? Sure did and we were more like an after thought. TT wasn't shit until they signed a ton of dudes in the portal last year. Money talks and if we have it, it's time to nut up or shut up.
That INT rate is the one that scares me. Hilariously, Raiola is more of a statistical comp to Mendoza than Hoover. 8 y/a, 11.05 y/c smack in between the 2 for INT rate, 18/6 vs 16/6. More realistically like 240ypg than 222 (due to USC injury).
Obviously that INT rate can be coached down. But some guys just will never stop hucking picks haha.
I believe they’ll spend $30M. I don’t have confidence that they’ll spend $30M wisely. We’re going to once again be the schmucks that overpay for B/C level players.
