His portal class ranking was #30 his first year & he was getting a ton of talent from small schools, but they were still mostly 3 stars.
He’s hit back to back homeruns on QBs in the portal though
Cigs gonna have a Saban like grip on the Big Ten as long as he wants to coach and that's the reality we have to deal with far beyond when Rhule is shit canned
They still did a pretty good job of hitting on portal additions. Cignetti has it figured out. I could see Indiana taking a step back, but I’ll be surprised if they aren’t always a top 15 team under Cignetti at this point.
Only hope is he strikes out on his next qb choice
I think a lot of it is still about the Jimmy and the joes in most cases, but Cignetti is one of those few coaches who is just the man. He can identify talent and coach them up. He is on another level. He is easily the best coach to come out of the Saban coaching tree which is crazy.
Cignetti is in another stratosphere than Rhule. He can evaluate talent, has a great staff, his team plays with an edge, and they are beating great teams. No amount of $$$ for buying players is going to make Rhule a coach on Cig's level.
If you look at portal rankings for 2025, Mendoza was the #2 ranked QB in the portal behind Carson Beck. So I'm sure he will once again get a great QB.
On a side note, it's crazy how Kiffin identified Trinidad Chambliss. That dude was like the 30th ranked transfer QB in the portal.
This line of thinking is flawed. We are Nebraska. This will not happen.
Indiana’s staff has likely been together a long time and is A+. NU is continuing to piece together a staff and identity. If we started signing top 10 classes that would help us jump up more quickly however we aren’t catching the Indiana staff unless the bottom falls out with their talent levels.
The Simulation™ is real. It doesn’t matter what we do. If we had all their transfers they would suck here. If they had our transfers they would be incredible there.

I’m actually surprised his two coordinators haven’t been up for some of these head coaching jobs. They are in that 35-40 year old range.
Which really begs the question to me… most of those dudes were at James Madison, so Nebraska could have had nearly all of them if they identified and wanted them. It’s coaching. Cignettis offensive and defensive coordinator has been with him since he was at Elon. They have their way and they stick to it.
