If you can have Wilcox and you don't try for him or for Knowles you are foolish. I prefer Wilcox. No matter how bad Cal might have been otherwise his defense was always good. Personally I will miss having Butler, because he was doing some good things in the back-end. Obviously based on comments there was a personality conflict with Rhule, and I worry that Snow ends up having the job full time ...
There’s a very rational argument for canning banks in Knoxville. I prolly wouldn’t, but I also wouldn’t be mad about it. Not even saying it couldn’t be a good hire just laying that out there.75% of our fan base wants everybody gone.

Then 75% of our fanbase are fools. Part of our problem over the last 15 years has been turnover within the staff; it kills development. Of course the corollary is that you have to make really good staff picks in the first place, which has also been a problem.
Rhule flat out said that Snow is not a candidate. If you can have Wilcox and you don't try for him or for Knowles you are foolish. I prefer Wilcox. Classic misdirection. Can't announce it's snow til they go through the hiring checklistRhule flat out said that Snow is not a candidate.

I listened through the Rhule press conference and he sort of intimidated that there wouldn’t be a lot of other staff changes. The implosion here if Donnie is retained will be truly epic.Kind of weird that this bomb went off on Monday and then the week was relatively quiet.
I remember it differently. White was always planning to leave after 1-2 years to get a HC job. In fact, he interviewed after year one and did not get one. Rhule did some succession planning and hired a replacement because he and White both figured he'd be gone after year two, and the deal with Butler was likely always that he'd be on the staff one year and then replace White.Fucking hilarious listening to Rhule's press conference. In describing the DC he wants he pretty much described all of Tony White's strengths. You know the guy who created a "subculture" of the defense being good and playing hard with and for each other. I'm not saying bring him back or he doesn't have weaknesses as a DC but yeah. Hilarious. Rhule hand picked Butler to become the DC and there wasn't a candidate in the world who was getting the job over Butler. Now suddenly Rhule realizes they weren't compatible. Yeah right.
Is this an assumption? If not how do you know? If you are basing it off of Tony interviewing after season one it is chicken and egg time. I kind of find it hard to believe that Rhule hired him on his initial staff thinking "I need to replace this guy right away". But by the end of the first season after Tony knocked it out of the park Rhule sure was thinking that. So the best thing is to assume Tony is a terrible person and shitty DC right?I remember it differently. White was always planning to leave after 1-2 years to get a HC job. He hired Tony because he had the qualities he wanted. He still wants those qualities.
Even in yr 1 of Tony White, Rhule alluded to the fact that he was not expecting to have him for an overly long period of time. And he has even shared advice that he is giving Tony on his HC job search. Is this an assumption? If not how do you know? Tony interviewed for HC jobs yes. But he stayed here instead after his AD gave him a raise. Weird though how Tony didn't interview for that HC job when he did leave. Made a lateral move instead. Don't think about the why's of that. Just assume Tony is a terrible person and shitty coach and ignore history repeating itself. It couldn't be that Rhule was doing everything he could to get Tony out and the best optic was to do everything he could to help Tony get that opportunity. I wonder why when Tony left there were clearly hard feelings there. Why if Tony were leaving for all the publicly stated reasons? Oh that's right. Tony is a terrible person and shitty coach.
Convince me that when he hired Tony he was also looking for his replacement. Make that make any kind of sense. And I'm sure when Tony hired his coaching staff all he could think of was how great it would be to get out of Nebraska. The narrative just falls apart so easily.
that was all really transparent, and Tony even thanked Rhule for the help prepping for his interview with UCLA. the rumors all pointed towards him being really close to getting the UCLA job after 2023 when they hired FosterEven in yr 1 of Tony White, Rhule alluded to the fact that he was not expecting to have him for an overly long period of time. IIRC Rhule made it pretty clear that we wouldn't have White for that long. TW was very happy at Syracuse. He only left there so he could get a better program on his resume to get a job as a HC.
That much I believe to be true. But if the rest were true why was year two what it was? Instead of being over joyed and happy that his guy got an extension to stay longer he hired his replacement anyway. And made it plain that was his preferred DC. Who is now fired. It just kind of amused me and honestly triggered me a bit listening to Rhule describe they guy he pushed out in favor of his ex buddy Butler as who he wants for a DC. Acting like its some revelation that Butler didn't turn out to be a player's coach. No shit the guy grew his chops in the NFL. All the sudden he was going to become a rah rah guy? I don't know how the Butler thing went down. I'd love to know. That much I believe to be true. But if the rest were true why was year two what it was? His hiring or firing? Or both?I don't know how the Butler thing went down. I'd love to know.
My only guess is Rhule prides himself on giving guys their first chance. He gets off on it. And I don't think he likes to bring in big established vets that will ruin is OOU vibe. He hired Dana but he already knew Dana was OOU.
It was all a mistake as it turns out.
looking back at some of his quotes in the offseason, he was frustrated by the pass defense giving up a lot of 3rd and longs and talked a lot of going to a more NFL style with relying on 4 man pressures vs TW's blitz packages.I don't know how the Butler thing went down. I'd love to know.
