Breaking JoBu Out

Ya, I mean I get it hiring the best you can. But imagine Tony White being a pretty good DC for us and seeing this quote about the guy you didn't have a say on hiring coming to your assistant pool:

🤦‍♂️

JFC why was I thinking someone other than Butler as the DB coach to replace Cooper... For some reason I was only thinking of Snow.

Regarding Butler, I always assumed the strategy was for TW to get a HC job and have a DC on your staff ready to pick up the mantle. I also get having a guy ready to go if White underperforms as well but as always I'd prefer a guy with actual established experience and results.

I’ve said it before. I’m a 4-3 guy. I know and love the defense.

Who’s in our 2-deep if we had a 4-3 to start the year?

I’ll be open about the fact that IMO we don’t have any better 4-3 defensive lineman than we do 3-3 or 3-4.
The 4-3 is really tough in today's football, it's why Phil Parker and Cockeye shifted from it and to the 4-2-5 right around the time we hired Frost. The 4-3 just has way too many checks and "rule breakers" with how football is played now. The 4-2-5 gives you flexibility to play faster.

I haven't been a 4 down linemen guy ever since I watched Bo try to set the edge with our safeties against Wisconsin in the 2012 CCG. But I also think the 3-3-5 was Tony White's thing... get a guy in to run what he wants to do and knows how to do. 3 or 4 down linemen I don't really care.

Lendhardt sucks dick. They need to process him. RVP is not a nose. He’s like Ty where he needs Nash to eat block so he can rush the passer. Hopefully Terry provides this, but we need some girth
Lendhart was freshman All-American, no? He was ass this year but so were a lot of guys that had talent. Gotta be an issue with coaching/scheme

I've always been a 4-3 guy but honestly it's Jimmie's and Joe's.

If you're an experienced Husker message board person everybody remembers when Nebraska was a 4-3 team and every message boarder out there was clamoring for a 3-4 to recruit "athletes" for the OLB positions to rush the passer because it was impossible to recruit pass rushing DEs. Now the claim is it's impossible to recruit 2 gap nose guards.

I've always used Cockeye and Wisconsin from a few years ago as these examples. Cockeye is a great 4-3 defense. Wisconsin was a great 3-4 defense. Both worked in the Big 10 because they recruited, developed and coached up to that defense.
Yeah, it's really toughness and guys being a bunch of unhinged psychos that want to hurt people that matters on defense.

Yeah, this is a good point. TW was actively looking to move to an HC role, so he can’t be butt hurt if we’re trying to back fill for that eventuality.

See, that's what I think Rhule's thoughts were. White was already interviewing for HC jobs, so I think he was like "Tony is going to get one next year so Butler can step right up."

White ended up having just as good of a defense in 2024, didn't get his HC job, so made a lateral move. We elevated Butler, our defense took a major step back. Rhule lost. White lost. Butler lost.

He has been ass for past two years. Looked great as a frosh, but last two years has been terrible.

We elevated Snow's involvement at the end of the 2023 season while he was with the Bears behind the scenes and then brought him back for the 2024 season, which pissed Tony White off since he was a top 10 total defense and top 15 scoring defense. He wanted more of his guys to help him with his defense, not more guys he wasn't familiar with. Then when Cooper was let go in the summer, he again had no input in who his DB coach would be and we actually went with someone that vocally stated their entire goal was to become a DC someday. So either White was just going to have to be ok with the new hire leaving at first chance to run a defense and train yet another new person, or he was hired to replace him.
What a shitshow. What quality DC would want to come here knowing this?

Multiple reasons for my LOL...

1) We essentially helped force an extremely good DC out with the Butler hire who had only one year of DC experience over a decade ago
2) Rhule again showing he's not doing all that great hiring coordinators, as he will now be on his 7th

I'll stop there... for now.
"extremely good"

Dude Tony White made no attempt to hide the fact that he wanted to find a head coaching job as soon as possible when he came here. Rhule didn't have any issue with that. Guys have ambition; work together and build them up and you can develop a great network of coaches and establish yourself as someone that people want to work with in the future.

I know you love you some Tony White, but I kinda figured after this season you'd let that dead horse go unbeaten.

You think there are a bunch of mercenary DCs out there that give a fuck about a prior shitshow?

I don't. Pay them and go. They'll be gone in two years anyway if they're worth a shit.
Seems like such a short-sighted strategy
Don't let your DCs run their defense because they're gonna leave anyways if their good
Or, translated, undermine your DCs and give your best ones an additional reason to leave early
How long has Phil Parker been at Cockeye? Two years?

I believe we even lined up in a 3 man front inside the 5 against Cockeye and they proceeded to run it down our throat. Quite puzzling.
My dad and I were talking about this during the game. 2nd and goal from the 2 and we had a 3 man line with everyone else in the endzone. And they ran it right into the endzone. I don't think I've ever seen that before.
