POLL Which coordinator performed better this year given the talent on the roster?

Curious to get the board’s thoughts on this. I fluctuate between the two when trying to answer this question. We had some good performances from each unit and plenty of bad ones.

On the one hand, I think most people expected the defense to take a step back this year and we all knew that we were going to be inexperienced on the DL. However, the complete lack of pass rush and inability to play assignment sound defense was frustrating.

In the other hand, most everyone expected a big jump from the offense. Outside of a few moments, we looked disjointed and seemed to lack an identity. For the first 3/4 of the year our OL couldn’t run block or pass protect, but even though those things improved late in the season the points never came. If not for EJ putting the team on his back a few times, we’re likely looking at a statistically terrible offense.

So what do you say? Given the talent provided to them, who performed better in their coordinator role?

He’s obviously great, and was happy with the adjustments that he made on ST after the first quarter today. Although I do question why Barney was returning KOs with a healthy Kenneth Williams on the field.

I think Butler performed better relative to the talent. But at the same time, I want a new DC.

Nebraska and the B1G is not where you cut your teeth and get experience. None of Rhule’s hires should be inexperienced and Butler is (as a DC). The margin for error in this conference is too thin. Find better asssitants.

I tend to agree.

One thing that’s concerning to me is our assistant salary pool. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but that figure didn’t increase at all with Rhule’s extension. IMO that’s nearly as important as NIL funding and given that Rhule is not serving as de facto coordinator on either side, you really need the best staff that money can buy.

Is $7M enough for the entire assistant pool? Does it make sense to have the Hc making more than his entire assistant staff when he’s relying entirely on them for scheme and play calling?

I could be wrong but I think that could increase with the snap of a finger if Rhule wanted to make a change.

Considering the amount of coin spent on the offense… hard to say Holgo, but have no idea if he was truly handicapped by Rhule and/or how much of DR’s changing plays at the line played a factor into it all.

I would hope so. But when you look at Ohio State most people want to talk about the price tag of their roster. They also pay nearly $12M for their 10 assistant coaches. They have four assistants making over $1M and two above $2M.

Is it really 7mill if he wants to spend more? V tech reportedly is giving Franklin. 9.5 mill/year for assistants and 3 for recruiting

neither.

Satterfield was so much better in short yardage situations.

Tony White was so much better at stopping the run.

Neither...I don't think either one has a system that works and to be honest, I don't think anybody knows what we are trying to do on either side of the ball and that includes players and coaches. It is all a disjointed mess. Actually I hated Satterfield but I would rather have him than Holgerson. Holgerson looks completely uncomfortable and has been a shitty hire

It’s tough. I can’t in good conscience vote against Holgo without knowing how much (if any) he was hamstrung by Rhule. Think about these Haarberg packages for a moment. It fails at what feels like an 80% rate. He runs like a chihuahua that thinks it’s a gorilla. Trying to run people over, but little does he know other teams are taught how to tackle. My point is do we really think Holgo sees this specimen in practice and thinks “Yeah we need to get him under center.”? To me that just has Rhule written all over it. Trying to make a neat story out of nothing. Fucking sucks.
