I think the reality is what we already knew. This air-raid shit (or any amalgamation of) doesn’t work in the SEC and B1G unless you have a very elite QB who can run and pass. Somebody with size and physicality that can take it to a defense, but can also beat you with his arm. Cam Newton, Josh Allen, Pat Mahomes, Lamar Jackson etc… And, of course, you also need an elite defense which is another conversation.

But the better path is to being elite is through the trenches and the players around your QB. You don’t necessarily need an elite QB to win in this league, if you can put the right team around him. Michigan, Georgia, Alabama and OSU have shown us this but for whatever reason very few others can replicate their success.

Will Howard
Justin Fields
Gunner Stockton
Carson Beck
Stetson Bennett
JJ McCarthy
AJ McCarron
Jake Coker
Mac Jones
Greg McElroy
Tua Tagaviloa

None of these QBs are will ever be considered great. Several don’t have any pro career whatsoever to speak of. They’re all “good” QBs but none of them are great by anny means. Other than that, what do they have in common? They had amazing teams around them.

Moral of the story… Having an “all world” QB shouldn’t be the goal. It should be pursued and embraced when you have one, but the number one priority should be to build a team around your QB.

I hate saying it but… Cockeye and Kuck Ferntz have the blueprint, they’re just too gay and retarded to implement it effectively. Nobody (talent wise) wants to play for those losers. But they have the right formula IMO.

Rant over./
I think your overall point is valid, but Tua was a VERY VERY good college QB and so far Stetson is too.

True, they were all good college QBs. My point was, IMO, to be successful with the air-raid type spread offenses you need a guy like Cam Newton, Vince Young, Tim Tebow, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson or Pat Mahomes, if you want to win at the highest level of CFB. Guys that can both run and pass and just put their team on their shoulders and take over the game.

All those guys are good college QBs, but they can’t take over a game like the players I just mentioned.

3 of the 6 on your list won a title, and 2 of them had good OL. Newton was a freak that kinda won that title mostly on his own.

Look at who wins titles, it's teams with great OL and DL, not necessarily a great QB. Ideally you have great LOS play and a great QB, but the LOS play is a necessity not the QB.

Rhule is the head coach, so he gets to dictate what our offense does. How much influence he uses during the game I am not sure, but I am more concerned with our defense right now. I don’t believe that Butler is the answer.

That was my point. The better way to build a winner is from the LOS out. Then you don’t necessarily need to have Superman at QB.

What we saw on the field last night was a talent issue, not necessarily a schematic issue (although there were some questionable things from Butler). We could have swapped coordinators with Pedo State last night and it wouldn’t have saved us from getting our shit rocked. You can point to PSU’s record all you want, but they clearly had way more talent and Terry Smith has those guys playing with heart again.

I know its much more comfortable to believe this but I'm not sure if I do. First of all Knowles doesn't run a 3-8 prevent defense like we do. And I'm of the opinion that given a full off season Knowles could do far more with Nebraska's players than Butler. I realize how scary it is to contemplate the idea that Rhule screwed the pooch hiring Butler. And insisting on the 3-8 prevent as our base defense. Sorry I can't call what we run a 3-3-5. It just isn't. Given his track record it doesn't make for warm and fuzzies for the future. I'm not completely out on Rhule but alarm bells are going off for me. Red flags keep popping up in ways I at least am unable to ignore. I think the months of December and January are going to be very interesting. Lets just hope interesting doesn't mean "Oh shit we're fucked now".
