Week 13 @ Penn State: Game Notes, Depth Chart, etc

I don't know if let down is the right term, but I guaranfuckingtee Penn State's DC Jim Knowles is going to be ready for the 15 plays TJ ran last week.

Holgorsen needs to adding some nuance to the playbook for LaTeef or it could get ugly for him.

And I don't want to spend all next week reading Husker message board chatter about people hoping he transfers.

That’s ridiculous. I’m sorry - I’m not trying to be a homer here - but that’s insulting.
I've posted this before but serious Q - what would the line be if Raiola was healthy? Maybe PSU -2 or -3? Pick 'em?

I'm not sure Lateef is that much worse than Dylan. That the line would move -8 pts for PSU. I actually think Nebraska will lose this game but I don't see them getting blown out. And that's what a -10.5 line signifies - a likely blowout.

If you look at body of work for both teams this year, this line smells like bullshit.

Considering that against UCLA it seemed not having Dylan was about a 14 point swing on the line. I'd think we'd be around 6-7 point favorites with Dylan.

Knowles will be ready with athletes that UCLA doesn’t posses to go with a full four quarters of game film .

I had kind of hoped they’d slip up against Michigan State and lose all shot at a bowl. I don’t know how much weight the kids on that roster are putting into making a bowl at 6-6, but I have to believe theres something there as well as not wanting to be a part of the first losing season at Penn State since 2020 and the first non Covid losing season since 2004.

I have no doubt Holgorsen and Co have been working the hell out of the BYE week getting Lateef up to speed with some additional wrinkles he’s comfortable with and can execute, but I don’t suspect they’ll vary greatly from what we did against UCLA.

It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out. Tough crowd, on the road against a great DC with very good talent.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule

***Rhule said he left on the road to recruit on Wednesday and got back Saturday. He said the reaction from coaches and players was “significantly different than it had been recently” after NU’s on-field success, fan support, and national attention.

***Rhule said he hired interim head coach Terry Smith on his first staff at Temple. He has a lot of respect for Smith and believes he’s an excellent coach.

***Rhule said Dasan McCullough was “full go” after missing the last game, and Dawson Merritt is practicing after missing the previous two games.

***Rhule said Nebraska would play the games at the times they’re scheduled. It’s not easy playing their fourth night game of the season, especially before a short week against Cockeye. “It’ll put us under a little duress, but we’ll be OK.”

***Rhule said Penn State’s backfield was as good as there was in the country, and the Nittany Lions lean heavily on the running game. He knows Nebraska has struggled against the run, and PSU will challenge them that way all night. He’s excited to see how his defense responds to that challenge.

***Rhule said he didn’t have very many emotions at all about returning to his alma mater at Penn State. It’s obviously a special place to him and his family, but he’s been back to State College “many times” over the years. “I want this week to be 100 percent about our players.”

On Lateef’s progress and Johnson’s national attention

***Rhule said he just wants TJ Lateef “to go play” this week. He said Penn State had “a ferocious pass rush,” and Lateef will undoubtedly have to make plays under pressure. Lateef must “play through the bad plays” and use his three skills – his brain, arm, and legs – to adjust and react on the fly.

“We’ve got to go play and see what happens.”

***Rhule said Jalyn Gramstad and Marcos Davila got “a bunch of reps” over the bye week to help build the depth behind Lateef. “You have to be ready.”

***Rhule said Nebraska has pumped crowd noise into practices, which they do before all road games. He said Penn State was like most teams, where it usually plays better at home, “and we’ll just have to go out there and have some poise in the noise.”

***Rhule loves how Emmett Johnson has handled his newfound publicity for national awards and recognition. Johnson always makes stuff like that about his team and never “brings that stuff into the building. “Emmett is among the most humble, humble people.”

“Everyone wants that, but you have to go earn it,” Rhule said of Johnson’s recent attention. “He’s done that.”

***Rhule said Dylan Raiola is still on crutches and a scooter, but he’s progressing well since his surgery. Raiola is still not ready to travel with the team to Penn State, although he should be ready to join the Huskers on their bowl trip.

Rhule’s also encouraged Raiola and all his players to keep a daily journal and write down their feelings each day. He said that helped him immensely through tough times, especially after the Carolina Panthers fired him.

***Rhule thinks Nebraska will “maybe take one or two more guys” in its 2026 recruiting class. They’ll be looking for “difference-makers” for those spots and then add whatever else they need through the portal.

Although I heard all about the Maryland to Minnesota turnaround which proceeded a pants shitting for the ages
Exactly. And honestly. That’s next week anyway. The mindset this week should be that they’re coming off a bye, well rested, get some injured players back, and have an opportunity to bury these pederasts at night on national tv. The travel after the game and preparation for the following week has nothing to do with Penn st.
