Lol at Tony White…

I don’t think anyone knows for sure what exactly happened on the four transfers you mention. J Will I don’t think they could’ve kept bc of his very cringe relationship with Pork Chop. He was a major character issue player too. I guess we can weigh what our thoughts are if someone knows for sure what happened. Was Princewell a character issue or work ethic issue? I mean we just don’t know a ton.

I would say trading a one year often injured Jamari for a rFr Nwaneri was a smart move. But again I do not know their exact funding and what choices they had to make so it makes it impossible to make an educated opinion on any of it.
You wouldn't have had to trade Nwaneri for Butler if you keep White and his position coach is what I'm saying... Nwaneri was coming here regardless.

I get the general sentiment, but Nwaneri is an exception to the rule. His ceiling is so high and he came to us a RSFrosh. He was a no brainer. If you don’t agree with that then we just need to agree to disagree and be thankful you aren’t in charge of the revenue share, because he’s also probably our best DL right now.

To your broader point. The highly rated kids who’ve been at bama or Georgia or Texas for 2-3 years and haven’t cracked the depth chart are not the guys who typically pan out and they likely cost more. And we’ve made that mistake several times. MJ Sherman was one of the few who actually worked out pretty well (and we miss him more than people realize).
I guess the point I'm making isn't that Nwaneri is a bad portal add, you take him all day... it's that if you could have kept White and Knighton, you also keep Williams and Butler at minimum and maybe are able to keep Princewill (though he was most likely to leave IMO) ON TOP OF getting Nwaneri.

The goal is to get old with guys in your system. All of our veterans transferred out and we bring in younger guys with potential. I think that's my bigger overall point.

Woah... how did we get here?
I'm not saying he will go #1. I'm saying that he has all of the intangibles and measurements that are required to be that kind of player/draft pick. He was rated the way he was out of high school for a reason (I know that recruiting rankings aren't always perfect, but they hit on these kids way more often than not).

He's the closest looking thing to Randy Gregory that we've had here since. You pay 7 figures for a guy like that regardless.

Well, Nwaneri was the #1 Edge Rusher in the 2024 class according to On3, didn't play and transferred. The guy who was behind him and also a five star led the Texas Longhorns in sacks as a true freshman and helped them get to the CFP. Guy that was #3 and a five star was a True Freshman All-American for South Carolina. #4 guy made the All-SEC Freshman Team at Tennessee.

So...
Nwaneri played 38 snaps for Mizzou & had 1 sack. Simmons had 9 sacks in 472 snaps (1 in 52.4). Nwaneri is therefore a 27.5% better sack artist than Simmons.

You’re going to have to lay out pay variances and the details for us to be able to have a reasonable conversation on this. Otherwise it’s just you have facts and we’re guessing what exactly that means. Keeping White didn’t seem to be an option so not really worth the discussion on him. We will see how TW does the remainder of the year and going forward.

I thought I heard that last years defensive staff did not like Princewell so I am not sure if TW etc staying would’ve kept him.

The DL left largely due to the DC and position coach leaving. Once that happened, money was a secondary positive for everyone to leave other than Princewill. I think he was gone no matter what. Pay variance isn't even a subject I'm referencing, the guys got paid more elsewhere but that wasn't the primary reason most of those guys left. It was a cherry on top.

As far as keeping White not being an option... that's the crux of the issue. If you want to talk about pay variances, not being able to keep your DC from a lateral move for the same exact money is a pretty big concern of mine. How TW does elsewhere doesn't matter much to me, he was excellent for us. So much so that people were scared we would be losing him to a HC job.

Virginia might have been his ‘Indiana’ for ’25.

He rights the ship, FSU gets their crap together and beats Miami and they’ll likely finish 11-1 in a pretty down ACC and in the CFP.

He’ll be talked about again for the UCLA job, etc.

This wasn’t a blip and they get smoked again a couple of times and he’ll be looking at another lateral move in the near future.

$1.6 million in Tallahassee is more than $1.6 million in Lincoln. Saves around $80,000 in state income tax and overall lower cost of living.

There isn't much difference in the cost of living between the two. 80k is a good chunk of money by itself though.
