Nwaneri for Williams

I'd like to have Gbayor back, Watson-Trent has not been as good. I'd also take Butler over Moore/George, don't think it's a huge difference but I'd rather have the continuity. I think Nwaneri and McCullough are upgrades.

Fair points, but framing Nwaneri in that light is a bit disingenuous. He was the #1 overall recruit the previous cycle and only played in 4 games with Missouri. Of course his stats don’t match his potential, but he’s the type of portal player every team in the country sets aside a wad of cash for, regardless of position.

That's the point I was making though... we lost our DC and DL coach to a lateral move when our defense was really good because of behind the scenes stuff. Continuity is king for a place like Nebraska with limited funds no matter if it's coaches or players compared to SEC teams and places like Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan.
If we can't afford to keep a guy like Jimari Butler who everyone is now saying wasn't that good, what do we think we are going to get in return in the portal for less money?

I appreciate the opposite side of it, but I will never quote someone's high school rating as why we need to grab them out of the portal. I honestly think that's the disingenuous thing to do when you have college stats to look at. The state of Missouri literally changed NIL rules to get the Tigers to be able to pay for him early and get him to commit, paid him a wad of cash due to his ranking, and he did nothing for them. We were able to get him at a bargain due to his lack of production and his coach being here now.
There have been way more Arik Gilbert's, Markese Stepp's, Tyreek Johnson's that were 5 stars out of high school that didn't amount to really anything than 5 stars we've grabbed that have panned out, and that's why they were in the portal. Quoting high school ratings for guys you are getting out of the portal just seems like fools gold to me.

I wouldn't be surprised if Butler wasn't money related. He had a chance to go play for the home school where he probably wanted to go out of high school. Better chance at a NC. How much more would we have had to pay over LSU to keep him here. Was that even an option?

Nwaneri is the kind of kid who ends up going #1 overall in the draft. You do whatever possible to get that kid on your roster.

I don’t think anyone knows for sure what exactly happened on the four transfers you mention. J Will I don’t think they could’ve kept bc of his very cringe relationship with Pork Chop. He was a major character issue player too. I guess we can weigh what our thoughts are if someone knows for sure what happened. Was Princewell a character issue or work ethic issue? I mean we just don’t know a ton.
I would say trading a one year often injured Jamari for a rFr Nwaneri was a smart move. But again I do not know their exact funding and what choices they had to make so it makes it impossible to make an educated opinion on any of it.

Yea to me it’s about value you’re getting in return. So far I don’t think any of the guys are showing they’re real difference makers & if we’re limited on NIL, do we really want to fork over more money/overpay for guys that are going to be a middling player at LSU or FSU? They aren’t going to help us against Michigan
We can use these guys as examples going forward & nwaneri has higher upside if u can get him to tap into it then maybe you got a guy that’s worth investing in vs a couple guys that won’t make that much of a difference. Williams had 3 games last year against lesser competition, no where to be seen against top teams.

I get the general sentiment, but Nwaneri is an exception to the rule. His ceiling is so high and he came to us a RSFrosh. He was a no brainer. To your broader point. The highly rated kids who’ve been at bama or Georgia or Texas for 2-3 years and haven’t cracked the depth chart are not the guys who typically pan out and they likely cost more. And we’ve made that mistake several times. MJ Sherman was one of the few who actually worked out pretty well (and we miss him more than people realize).

I think that's fair. I do know he got paid more than we were willing to go to, but when he lost his DC and position coach, and then got offered more to a school closer to home, makes it a bit easier. Continuity brother.

Well, Nwaneri was the #1 Edge Rusher in the 2024 class according to On3, didn't play and transferred. The guy who was behind him and also a five star led the Texas Longhorns in sacks as a true freshman and helped them get to the CFP. Guy that was #3 and a five star was a True Freshman All-American for South Carolina. #4 guy made the All-SEC Freshman Team at Tennessee.
