This team is interesting…

I agree with most of what you say, but you still can’t say we will win 9-10 games is a for sure even if Raiola plays well which I think he will. Our lines have to get better or we will be a 8 win regular season team at best. We actually got Biff's Butthole Surfers at the right time, and still couldn’t get it done.
1000000%

good points.

what haunts me is those 2 first drives. we go up 2 scores and it couldve forced meatshitgan to play into our strength.. huge if.. but let me cope.

I’ve rewatched the 1st half. All I could stomach so far, but I’ll watch the rest soon enough. That being said, it was very odd to see our o-line open holes and serviceably protect DR when the plays were scripted? I guess Biff's Butthole Surfers’s size and physicality won out over time. But it was odd to see the line play noticeably better when the plays were scripted.

There’s a lot of reason why offenses look better (are better) and more efficient when they’re running scripted plays. But it usually doesn’t have a major effect on your o-lines ability to block…

Cignetti has a unique ability to see and evaluate lower level talent that can play in the B1G. Not sure any other coach in D1 is better at that. And pulling legit B1G level talent from group of 5 and FCS teams really makes your money go far.
I think it is more likely that Cignetti was "lucky". I.e., no one bats 1.000 or close to it. Any .300 hitter can have a lengthy streak of hits in their career - statistics even suggest it is near certain.

He may be a great evaluator, but I think it's highly unlikely he can replicate this level of success going forward. The streak just makes him appear unique right now. He likely isn't uniquely good at evaluating and will return to earth.

Maybe, hope you’re right. I don’t see Mich winning the B1G and I don’t see us winning 10 games. But it’s a long season, hope I’m wrong and you’re right.

And that’s not to say I think we suck and are gonna go 6-6 or something like that. But I think 8 maybe 9 (big maybe) might be our ceiling without noticeable improvement in a few areas.

Follow my logic on Biff's Butthole Surfers and look at their schedule:

Wisconsin- W
@ USC - 50/50
@ Biff's Butthole Surfers State- W
Purdue - W
@ Northwestern - W
@ Maryland - W
Ohio State- a team they've dominated for 4 Straight seasons. W

That's 8-1 or 9-0 in the Big Ten. That will get them into the title game.

Oregon will probably finish 7-2
Penn State- 8-1
Ohio State- 7-2 or 8-1

Indiana - 7-2

I think they are definitely going to the Big Ten title game and if they beat Ohio State again, they will be the hottest team in the country going into the postseason.

A lot “ifs” there corn…

1. If they beat USC
2. If they beat OSU
3. If Oregon has 2 losses
4. If PSU doesn’t go undefeated
5. If Indiana loses 2 games
6. If they can beat whoever they would play in the B1G champ game

I mean, yeah, if all those things happen they will win the B1G.

Actually they don't have to beat USC to get into the Big Ten title game. That "if" doesn't matter.

And Oregon has road games at Penn State, Washington and Cockeye.

Indiana has road games at Oregon. One of those teams is going to cancel the other out.

Penn State has to play at Ohio State.

Ohio State has to play at Washington this week. Julian Sayin is going to struggle.

If a bunch of teams are 8-1, it will go down to head to head and then ranking in the playoff poll.

Biff's Butthole Surfers doesn't have to play any of those teams outside of Ohio State who they seem to dominate.

I will say or agree that “if” (and if we’re playing the if game let’s play the if game) we somehow beat USC, lose to PSU in a respectable manner and win the games we’re favored in… That would put us at 10-2, but just outside the B1G championship game (likely) with 2 conference losses.

If Biff's Butthole Surfers and PSU play for the B1G championship, won’t really matter to us who wins, it would make a very compelling argument to get us into the playoffs as a bottom 3 seed. (12-10) Our only 2 losses were to the B1G champion and the team they played for the championship. And we avoid playing in the championship game and getting smashed on national TV for the last memory of us. Would be very fun possibility…

Pretty balls deep into fantasy land with that scenario, but it’s possible.

Couple things on the if list that could be negotiable depending on what other teams do and don’t do. But they pretty much have to hit on most of those possibilities if the concrete conclusion is Mich wining the B1G.

Well, would’ve probably agreed with you a month ago. But I myself said… “Let’s see if Cignetti can retool his roster again. He lost a lot of players off of last year’s team.”

And here we are. They look like a legit top 10-15 team and execute at a ridiculously high level on both sides of the ball. (especially on offense)

I think you and everyone else can save yourself some heartache if you give up on the playoffs.

This isn't a playoff team.

If we could've gotten one more season to combine Ty Rob, Nash, and Bullock with 2nd year Raiola and these receivers, they might have had a shot.

Indiana spent A LOT of money and Cignetti used it like a genius.

Edit: Also, Cignetti has a unique ability to see and evaluate lower level talent that can play in the B1G. Not sure any other coach in D1 is better at that. And pulling legit B1G level talent from group of 5 and FCS teams really makes your money go far.
I would HOPE that NU has SIGNIFICANTLY more money than IU for anything and everything related to football.

To me it looks like we are spending like that of a top CFP/5-10 team in terms of coaching salaries, support staff salaries, recruiting operational expenses, nutrition (might be the biggest budget in all of CFB), best facilities, and best recovery.

None of the above matters sadly IMO if our NIL isn’t top 15 or better YOY.

Absolutely agree with you. We had the chance to be ahead and have Biff's Butthole Surfers chase, would have worked much better in this matchup. Not scoring on both those drives was a huge missed opportunity.

Just my random observations from yesterday:

1. M1chigan shut down Hunter and Key yesterday, which probably caused DR to hold onto the ball longer than needed for half of his sacks. EJ is not good at pass protection either.

2. Penalties seem to be way down this year and haven't really too many drives so far this year. Thought we played clean for the most part.

3. Tackling in open space is an issue. Biff's Butthole Surfers did a great job at it and we whiffed and paid for it. Players were in the correct position but couldn't finish the play.

4. Need to address the DL in the portal next year. There was little to no push by the DL. Need to tamper with some SEC teams.

5. Need better talent at RB. Losing Dowdell hurts this year with no back who can power through people.

6. DR did a good job yesterday, but thought we should've ran some bootlegs to move the pocket and maybe it would've freed up the WR's. (prob a stupid a take)

DR’s play overall is not one of our issues, it’s one of our strengths. But we all knew (or most of us) that his lack of mobility will be a problem. Now… this isn’t all or even mostly on Dylan. He worked hard on his obvious weakness. Coaches could’ve helped him out a lot by putting a good offensive line in front of him and stud RB behind him.
Dylan played well enough to win and this is in no way an indictment of his play. However, given our Oline issues, his lack of mobility is going to cause us problems all year long. Our tackles have been exposed and he cannot penalize the rush with his legs effectively enough. Ends are going to pin their ears back on us every game.

We have to establish a running game and stick with it to give him some protection. We ran the ball with some limited success early against UM, but they went away from it. A couple of other gripes....

I'm not a fan of continuing to go back to all of the empty sets given our vulnerabilities on the line.

And please.... for love of all that is pure and holy.... do not throw another fade pass this millennium.

Edit...We are a 7 or 8 win team which is what I thought after seeing us against Cincy. The two weeks of scrimmages had me wishing for 10. I hope I'm wrong.
