Eh not really shitty compared to previous years, averaged finishing 6th in the half decade for ‘86. View attachment 58380
It might look ok in the averages now, but back then if you lost 2 games to Colorado and Oklahoma and ended up #3 in the Big 8 it was bad year. Those were the days fans were ready to run Osborne out of town because he "Couldn't win the big one". Different times for sure but if you weren't undefeated and playing for a National Championship it was considered a bad year 🤣.

We were not shitty in 1986. We finished ranked fifth.

I mean I wasn’t even alive but we hadn’t finished undefeated or played in a national title since ‘71 so either you were all delusional as fuck or you have bad memory.

His recollection is in line with what most Husker fans thought back then.

Prior to Colorado getting their shit together in the mid Eighties, we lost to anyone in conference but Oklahoma, and people would freak out. ’76 was a shit show. Tied LSU to open the season, lost to Missouri in late October, then back to back losses to Cockeye State and Oklahoma and we’re 7-3-1 headed into a late season road game at Hawaii. Everyone was convinced the wheels had come off, and we opened the season ranked #1.

We had some really good teams that SHOULD have won it all before that ’86 team, so ass pain was abundant.

I knew my research should’ve included one more google search to see if we lost any natties 🤦‍♂️

We had several teams post ’71 that could have won it all.

Should have played for one in ’78, but screwed up at Missouri. Should have won one in ’81, but lost to Clemson in the Orange Bowl. ’82 was the stolen game at PSU, ’83 was the failed two point conversion against Miami away from a 13-0 MNC season.

Most of the rest of the years looked like Pelini 9-3 seasons. Some teams better than others.

I'm simply amazed that anyone could post on Husker message boards and not have seen the 83 team being discussed
Younger me would be disappointed as well, younger me read every Husker book available and knew a lot more than I remember now about the history of Husker football.

I think you hit on at least part of the reason for the high expectations back then with the preseason #1. NU would start the season with a high ranking and a lot of promise and then for whatever reason it wouldn't work out in the end thus the frustration from the fans.

The best way I can relate it to the younger guys is these last few years it was this is the year we are going to make it to a bowl game again, well back then it was National Championships 🙁.
