Up 20-10, so I went to bed with my bet covered.

Woke up this morning and my bet is not covered.

The “we are going to the weight room tomorrow” comment by Rhule is interesting.

I thought we looked a little lean compared to Cincinnati. Not that this specific issue can be fixed in a day but I feel that our defense is better suited to be playing in the old school Big 12 days than the modern-day Big 10.

My general observations:

-We look small on defense. The lack of effectively replacing TR and NH is very, very evident. No amount of “us vs the world” or chip on your shoulder will fix that.

-I hate the 3-3-5 or 2-4-5 or whatever the hell we run. I know Butler is an NFL guy but as of right now we don’t look to have the athletes to effectively run those formations. I would love to be proven wrong.

-We need a pass rush. Badly. And our blitzes seemed late and ineffective as well.

-Keep Shavers in the game and get McGahee on ASAP. We need an influx of athleticism on D.

-Offensively, our run game showed zero creativity. Maybe we were used to pushing our undersized DL around in practice but we just couldn’t get anything going. Yes, their safeties played high but crashed HARD as soon as they recognized a run. A lot of our run plays were too slow to develop.

-Not even a shot down field? No seam routes with our tight ends that would split a Cover 3? Outside of the TD no real RPO?

-Offensively, I thought our best players were Key, Hunter, and Lindemeyer. Lindemeyer in particular look damn good.

-We are paying a lot of money for a guy who false starts on the one yard line. I would have yanked his ass then and there.

-Why we didn’t double team The Godfather is beyond me. Lutovsky was getting his shit pushed in on the regular.

-I thought Johnson looked good but way tired at the end. We need to stop going no huddle all the time and give him a breather.

Fun comparison, I remember being at the Nebraska game in arrowhead to open the season in 1998 against a Big12 team where we gave up 17 points and 175 yards rushing to a team that ended the year 5-6.

We needed a goal line stop as time expired to prevent the game going into overtime.

Openers are hard

This one has been frustrating for me. I wasn't at the game where I could see what Cincy was doing with their safeties, but you have to take shots downfield. You run the ball as much as NU did in 2 TE sets, you should find opportunities to do this with playaction. Even if you don't hit them you can keep them honest and off the LOS.

From what I saw they were running that ISU 3 deep safety look. There are ways around that though.

Zero turnovers, zero special teams blunders, zero % chance we win that game in any of the last 6 years. Not pretty but I’ll take it. A lot of shit to clean up the next 3 weeks.
Really needed a win like that. Colorado was too easy last year - let’s hope this game builds confidence with close games
