I posted this on 'X', but was curious this boards thoughts. I would be in the "that's rarely good" camp... however, offensive coordinator should be an upgrade in my opinion. Special teams wasn't any good so can we be worse? I do worry about DC.

Is bringing in a new ST coordinator ever a concern? I don't think I have ever seen someone point it out as a weakness going into the season. So I say that one is really not one to be concerned about.

The other two, DH has a leg up as he has been here and is very established. Hard to really call him a new OC at this point.

So that eaves the DC. Definitely concern about Butler. But I would be more concerned if he was brand new to the team but he has been around these guys for a year. I am more concerned with what Butler has to work with than his ability as a DC.

To sum up, I am mildly concerned with Butler and not at all about the other two.

As in Snow can’t call a defense? Or we’re in trouble because we switched play calling duties?

Because we switched duties. To me that means Butler f’d up and Snow had to relieve him of his duties. I’d be more comfortable if Snow was the main guy from the start.

I’m firmly on team we should’ve just hired Snow.

The amount of manufactured panic driving the anti-Butler narrative is a massive waste of energy. There is literally ZERO evidence to support the the idea of Butler being a bad or even shitty Defensive Coordinator. From all I can tell, some "loud" posters on various Husker sites and then a few of the very Gay Husker Podcast groups, and the Husker Twitter bros "didn't like the hire."

Those opinions have crafted a negative perception about Butler's personality, coaching, acumen, and communication style.
The dude spent 10 years in the NFL and never once got fired. And that was only with two teams. That's almost impossible to accomplish as an NFL assistant.

I personally will always lean back into the jimmies and joes mantra of college football. I have seen Nebraska play bad defense before. And many of those bad defenses were so devoid of talent, that coaching was almost irrelevant. In fact, we have a lot of people "very concerned" about the d-line after the losses of Ty and Nash. I get it. I really do. Those dudes will be very difficult to replace.

But then I also realize that Nebraska won't be relying on players like Devin Drew and Stephon Wynn to fill that voice. In fact, players like Drew and Wynn probably dont even crack the 2-deep on the 2025 roster. I believe Matt Rhule made sure in the off season that the defense is going to be very competent once again.

K...

I was hoping Rhule would have brought Snow with him in 2023. But the dude is 69 years old now, took an analyst position with the Chicago Bears in 2023 instead of following Rhule to Lincoln or accept any form of position coaching role, and, according to bios I could find, was out of any coaching or analyst role in 2024 until Rhule brought him on as a consultant near the end of last year.

I don’t think he wants to DC again, and wouldn’t have accepted such a position if Rhule offered. Rhule probably did and he declined. But I think he is up for a glorified analyst / mentor position for a bit before he eventually calls it a career. Perhaps this way he feels he can still get his football coaching fix while feeling like he’s setting things up for the future.

When we talk defense we need to remember it isnt just Butler, Phil Snow is helping and I trust Snow
This is a good point and does make me feel better about the D. We do have a lot of DC experience on staff outside of our actual DC.

I wouldn’t even say I’m overly worried about Butler, but there’s also ZERO evidence he’ll be a good coordinator. I’d just feel a lot safer about it if we had Rhules long time DC instead of the guy that’s never been a coordinator before. You can list his credentials all you want, we know they’re pretty impressive. It doesn’t change the fact that in a do or die year for Rhule, we’re counting on a first time coordinator.

I would imagine prep and adjustments during the game is way more important than the actual plays called. Maybe someone smarter could say.

I think we upgraded almost everywhere. I do firmly believe butler & snow are a huge downgrade. Itll be hard to replace that defense. This is rests firmly on the shoulders of Dylan & Holgo, unless the rest of the team decides to step up.
