Washington punter transfer Jack McCallister dropped a surprise announcement on Wednesday.

McCallister said on X that he plans to leave Nebraska after a change of circumstances. He came to NU to replace Brian Buschini after serving as the starter at UW the previous three seasons.

NU plans to use a rugby-style punter in 2025

So what happened? A few things have changed for McCallister since he was recruited to Lincoln in December.

No. 1, Ed Foley is no longer NU’s special teams coordinator. In January, head coach Matt Rhule replaced Foley with Tennessee special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler.

While at UT, Ekeler used a rugby-style punter to execute his schemes. HuskerOnline confirmed on Wednesday that Ekeler plans to go to a rugby-style punter at Nebraska in 2025, which led to the “change” in circumstances for McCallister.

One of the main reasons he left Washington after the 2024 season was that the Huskies planned to move to a rugby-style punter.

The breakup between McCallister and NU was as amicable as it appeared on his social media post. A source told HuskerOnline on Wednesday that McCallister still plans to finish out spring practice in Lincoln.

What’s next at punter for Nebraska?

What’s Nebraska’s next move at punter? None of the current players on the NU roster fit the description of a rugby-style punter.

Look for a new punter to join the Husker roster in the coming weeks- somebody Ekeler is already familiar with.

This was a tough situation for McCallister, but a lot has changed with Nebraska’s punting game plans since December, with Ekeler now in charge.

We will hear more from Rhule about this matter when he addresses the media again on Thursday.

It's stupid over there right now. Sipple started a thread saying he knows the story behind McCallister leaving, but he's not going to tell us and wait for Dean to tell us. He said "it's Dean's intel and he doesn't want to blow it."
Hehehehee…the most Dean thing ever.
