OT: Tipping

15 bad
20 average
25 good
30+ great

I've had a pretty blessed life. People working for tips usually don't have a lot. I've never regretted giving a bit more.

That being said, I'm kinda loathing tipping for people who just took my freaking order at the counter. I'll still do a little, like 10%...but come on man.

Met my wife when she was a bartender so we typically tip 20%. Will give bigger tips at nice restaurants where the servers know their shit and typically do a great job. I'll normally tip delivery driver's and Uber drivers too.

What I hate though is the restaurants where you have multiple people do different things and I see my actual waiter about 1 out of 3 encounters. Like, is my 20% going towards the guy who helped drop off the food and just walked away without checking if we needed anything and then I have to wait an extra 5 minutes for the waiter to come back around and ask if we need anything else?
Most of the time places like that split tips. As a server a long time ago, the wait staff had to tip bussers and food runners.

On the family spring break vacation and as everyone else has mentioned, it's way out of hand. The lady at the food/news stand shop standing behind the register that I brought my magazine and drink up to turned it around once swiping my card and it had a tip line. For what?

Prefer a place that just does a service charge up front, but 20% min. 25%-30% if it's a really great experience or I've had a few.

Tip more than I probably should on the random Square options, but it's usually just a couple bucks and it's rough at there.

I like all the places like Hyvee that ask you to round up to charity for their tax write off. They are pros at ripping people off
Yeah I feel like a heartless bastard when I say “No” to that guy I’m not giving any company a free tax write off.

I definitely don't. I hate that type of question. Put out a jar like every other person.

I directionally agree. I would rather just write a check directly to the organization than give a tax write off to a for-profit company.

This is what i do. Usually around 20% but rounded up to the nearest $5 increment.

Usually around 20% for average-good service and I try to use cash when I can for the tip. I’ve occasionally had bad service as a result of an understaffed restaurant where the server doesn’t get to me a whole lot and you can tell they are trying but they are at an absolute dead sprint to get to everyone. Then I usually try to tip fairly good since it’s not their fault there isn’t enough help. This has actually been happening quite a bit lately.
I don’t tip at all for carry out.
If the server has a shitty attitude or is lazy I leave little to no tip. Probably can count these times on one hand my entire life.
I’ll be damned if I’m leaving a 30% tip unless service is above and beyond. Again, one hand.

I worked in the service industry for a number of years in my teens. I have what I would consider reasonable expectations based on having been a server. If those expectations aren't met, I will often still tip 20% bc I realize the importance of tips to their livelihood. I tip very well in general (often times above 20%). However, if you straight suck balls at your job, i'm going to let you know with the tip, or lack there of.

when dining in at any restaurant
1. Does server tell me their name?
2. Do they have a good attitude, smile, say Hi
3. Drinks show up to the table quickly
4. Can they answer questions about the menu with knoweldge
5. Do they thank us for coming to the restaurant

You get 20-25%...If the answer is no to any of the above...the % goes down. Maybe I'm an ass but I want to have a good meal and an interaction with the person bringing me what I want to eat.

Fast food...hell no
Take out food, pick it up...nah
