What's your tipping philosophy? When I was younger I remember the tiers being 10% (standard), 15% (good), 20% (great).

Now the suggested tips don't start below 15%, and everyone wants a tip for the most menial and basic things (including typing in your order and spinning an iPad around).

I like to tip as well as almost anyone if it's someone providing service, and they're friendly and making at least a reasonable effort, but I also just gave a $5 tip on a $52 order for a server who only stopped by once during a 90 minute meal, and just sauntered around without once smiling or saying anything beyond asking if we were ready to order, in a restaurant that wasn't even busy. And still felt like I gave him too much.

IMO, people who think 20% tips are an entitlement are one of the top 3 problems in modern society.

How about carry out? My wife...oh my wife and her tipping on carry out orders. SMH

Roughly a dollar from me...maybe. That's probably anything between a $30 - $60 order. And they talk about why people aren't prepared for retirement.

My general philosophy is that if I'm sitting in my car or standing in front of you to order/pick up, then there is no reason to tip. Only exception would be a bartender and that's more so that I can get a drink faster the next time. You're making a sandwich or a coffee and you're being paid at least minimum wage...

I'm doing the delivery in that scenario- they should be tipping me!

20% is standard now, which.... is probably a little high for standard.

I think tiers are fair. 10% for blah service, 15% for OK service, 20%+ for great service.

I've never been in a job that tipped, heck I've always been self employed. I have received "tips" (extra) from customers many times for thanks for a job well done (I always, always want to do the best job possible). I always tell customers who tip to please take it back. They never do. I split it up to any employees that were helping on that job.

I usually go around 20%, but I also do the tip where it will help me round my total up to the nearest dollar, so if its more than 20%, because of that.

But I've done 15% if they really are just 'average' on serving.

Delivery drivers I do 20%.

What I hate though is the restaurants where you have multiple people do different things and I see my actual waiter about 1 out of 3 encounters. Like, is my 20% going towards the guy who helped drop off the food and just walked away without checking if we needed anything and then I have to wait an extra 5 minutes for the waiter to come back around and ask if we need anything else?
