Former Oklahoma linebacker Dasan McCullough has committed to Nebraska out of the NCAA transfer portal, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

McCullough finished his second season with the Sooners during the 2024 season. However, his career began in the Big Ten with the Indiana Hoosiers. He will have one year of eligibility remaining to play for Matt Rhule and the Cornhuskers.

This past season, McCullough played in seven games for the Sooners. He recorded 17 tackles and three tackles for a loss. Injuries were a problem for the versatile defender earlier in the year, as he was unable to make his season debut until the Red River Shootout against Texas on Oct. 12.

Coming out of high school, however, McCullough was recruited as a defensive back — particularly at the safety position. He opened up about moving around the defense during this past regular season.

“I feel like last year I was playing more DB than I was linebacker,” McCullough said ahead of the Missouri matchup. “I feel like with Coach Alley this year, he’s more so adjusted to me and what to call while I’m out there. So I feel like he has a really good understanding of who I am as a player, so it’s been good.

“I think now it’s just I like my understanding of it has changed. So I kind of like the versatility of me being able to show my zone coverage along with me blitzing and being able to show me in the box, so I feel like that gets to show my versatility.”

Before college, McCullough was a four-star recruit in the 2022 recruiting class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. He was the No. 97 overall player in his class.

Three takes on Oklahoma LB Dasan McCullough's commitment to Nebraska

The Nebraska football team added another transfer portal commitment from Oklahoma linebacker Dasan McCullough.

Here are three quick takes on McCullough as the Huskers fill its 2025 transfer portal class.

McCullough has proven production at two Power Four schools

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound McCullough was a freshman All-American at Indiana in 2022 before transferring to OU in 2023. He played in 17 games over the last two seasons, making 12 starts at the cheetah and Will linebacker positions. He missed the first five games of 2024 with injury.

Oklahoma did not anticipate his entry into the portal. He logged 436 defensive snaps in 17 games at Oklahoma, with 47 tackles, six tackles for loss and three pass breakups.

While at Indiana, he saw action in 12 games, making four starts for the Hoosiers. He played 477 snaps at IU, with 49 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, four sacks and three pass breakups as a true freshman.

There’s no question McCullough gives NU a player they can plug in immediately in its 2025 defense in his final year of eligibility.

Position versatility

McCullough is a highly versatile athlete. His father, Deland McCullough, is the current Notre Dame associate head coach and running backs coach for Marcus Freeman. Before that, he worked under Andy Reid as the Kansas City Chiefs running backs coach.

He shared an interesting take on the feedback his son has received from NFL scouts.

“Long, dynamic, rangy, with elite athleticism for his stature. Bends, closes and strikes. High football IQ. Excels in coverage, pass rushing, and a violent on point tackler. Projects either as OLB, ILB, DE, hybrid nickel/safety. A true unicorn player at 6’5 235 that must stay healthy be developed beyond his physical skill. Needs to be used as a weapon and not a tool. Too talented to be limited.”

That type of position versatility should fit into the 3-3-5 defense, which gives players like McCullough the ability to move around to multiple positions.

Nebraska adds another player to the roster with Kansas City ties

Dasan McCullough is another player with high school football ties to Kansas City joining the Husker football program in 2025.

He is the fifth since adding Jamar Mozee to Matt Rhule’s coaching staff. Mozee was formerly the head coach of Lee’s Summit (Mo.) North High School.

Besides McCullough, Nebraska has added WR Isaiah Mozee (Lee’s Summit North), OL JuJu Marks (Olathe South), LB Dawson Merritt (Overland Park Blue Valley) and DE Williams Nwarnei (Lee’s Summit North) to its roster.

McCullough began his high school football career at Overland Park (Kan.) Blue Valley North in Kansas City from 2018 to 2020 before moving to Bloomington (Ind.) for his senior year in 2021.

McCullough’s father Deland worked with new Nebraska defensive line coach Terry Bradden with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2018-2020. He also worked with Dave Merritt, the father of Dawson Merritt, with the Chiefs during the 2019 and 2020 NFL seasons. Dave Merritt is currently Kansas City’s defensive back coach.

Deland McCullough left Kansas City for Indiana in 2021 to be the running backs coach and has been at Notre Dame since the 2022 season.

It’s also likely McCullough is connected with Mozee, a top Kansas City high school football coach at Lee’s Summitt (Mo.) North from 2015 to 2023.

Can we get his dad to come coach RBs too?
