It was called an "invalid signal" which according to the rulebook, appears they made the correct call.
In any case, fuck Cockeye. I'd be happy if it was the wrong call.

Good call. The problem is that they became less strict on this, but used to be extremely strict on it.
Rule is there because returners used to wave yelling get away, poison, Peter, etc, which lead to kicking team backing off and giving up, then returner would pick it up.
Several years ago, I got downgraded and put on the weekly training tape on this exact signal, but it only went for a few yards. The grader and training tape is put together by a BIG side judge (guy deep making this call).

Yep, I was about to mention the time it happened to DPE. He was waving guys off and calling "Peter Peter" - ie clear away from the ball, and then he caught the ball on the bounce and started running with it. But the refs ruled that it was an 'invalid' fair catch signal, negating the run after the catch.
