1639 - Cambridge College was renamed Harvard College in honor of clergyman John Harvard.

1781 - The German-born English astronomer Sir William Herschel discovered the planet Georgium Sidus, later known as Uranus.

1852 - The "Uncle Sam" cartoon appeared for the first time in N.Y. Lantern weekly.

1862 - President Abraham Lincoln signed a measure prohibiting Union military officers from returning fugitive slaves to their owners.

1868 - The Senate began President Andrew Johnson's impeachment trial.

1884 - Standard Time was adopted throughout the United States.

1901 - Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd president of the United States, died in Indianapolis at age 67.

1906 - Suffragist Susan B. Anthony died.

1925 - Tennessee passed a bill prohibiting the teaching of evolution in public schools.

1930 - Clyde W. Tombaugh announced the discovery of the planet Pluto.

1933 - Banks began to re-open after a holiday declared by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

1934 - A gang that included John Dillinger and “Baby Face” Nelson robbed the First National Bank in Mason City, Cockeye, making off with $52,344.

1964 - Kitty Genovese, 28, was stabbed to death near her Queens, New York, home. The case came to be a symbol of urban apathy, though initial reports that 38 neighbors ignored Genovese's calls for help have been disputed.

1969 - Apollo 9 returned to Earth after a mission to test the lunar module.

1972 - Britain and China resumed full diplomatic relations after 22 years; Britain withdrew its consulate from Taiwan.

1996 - A man shot dead 16 children and a woman teacher in a school in Dunblane, Scotland, before shooting himself.

2011 - The estimated death toll from Japan’s earthquake and tsunami climbed past 10,000 as authorities raced to combat the threat of multiple nuclear reactor meltdowns while hundreds of thousands of people struggled to find food and water.

2012 - The Encyclopedia Britannica discontinued its print edition after 244 years.

2013 - Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina was elected pope, choosing the name Francis; he became the first pontiff from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than 1,000 years.

2018 - President Donald Trump abruptly dumped Secretary of State Rex Tillerson -- via Twitter -- and moved CIA Director Mike Pompeo from the role of America's spy chief to its top diplomat.

2020 - President Donald Trump declared the coronavirus pandemic a national emergency, freeing up money and resources for state and local governments to fight the outbreak.

2020 - Louisiana became the first state to delay a presidential primary because of the virus; the April 4 primary was delayed until June 20. (It was later delayed a second time, to July 11.)

1918 - The Toronto Arenas defeat the Montreal Canadiens to win the inaugural NHL championship.

1925 - The Montreal Canadiens sweep the Toronto Arenas to win the NHL championship.

1954 - Bobby Thomson (Milwaukee Braves) broke his ankle sliding into a base during a spring training game. The Braves replaced him with a rookie named Hank Aaron.

1955 - Maurice "Rocket" Richard (Montreal Canadiens) was ejected from a game for fighting. Three days later, NHL commissioner Clarence Campbell suspended Richard for the rest of the season. Campbell's decision resulted in seven hours of looting and destruction of property.

1960 - The NFL's Chicago Cardinals announced their move to St. Louis.

1992 - Chick Hearn, broadcaster for the Los Angeles Lakers, called his 2,500th consecutive Laker game. The streak began in November of 1965.

1993 - Oksana Bayul became the youngest world champion when she won the world figure skating championship at age 15.

1999 - A.C. Green (Dallas Mavericks) played in his 1,000th consecutive game.

1999 - Phil Housley (Calgary Flames) became the American all-time points leader in the NHL when he reached 1,066. He passed Joe Mullen who had 1,063.

2007 - Mike Modano (Dallas Stars) scored his 500th career goal.

2011 - The Big East Conference set a record with 11 members being selected for the 68-team NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

2020 - Twelve hours after the PGA Tour canceled its flagship event, The Players Championship, Augusta National announces postponement of the Masters tournament to a date to be determined later due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
