It would be dumb to not use the portal. The NFL draft is a showcase every year of great players who college coaches missed on identify. The portal is an opportunity to go get some of those guysEven with elite recruiting you can't win the national championship without going into the portal.
Dabo tried and basically his program has fallen a part.
The whole system sucks. But it's where we are at.
I know there’s going to be lots of teams in the market for guys on the lines but I absolutely do not want to hear about how there weren’t really guys available in the portal to improve them like years past. There are A LOT of options right now.
Does he have any experience coaching D Line though?Alright, I've seen enough- hire that man as our DL coach!
If Brix and Taumua aren't ready to play in year 3 they never will be and we might as well process them.As much as it seems I'm not a big portal guy I would rather develop the guys especially on the lines. I don't mind using the portal as much for the skills guys though.
Unfortunately it's a necessary evil especially for NU at this point where either you don't have the developmental guys or they are not ready.
For example look at the bowl game depth chart. Redshirt freshman Grant Brix and Preston Taumua are the backups at Left and Right tackle respectively. Not that I don't think they are good players but I don't think they are ready to be starters yet for next year. Corcoran is done, hopefully they can get Gottula back on track and Pritchett who seems to finally be hitting his stride.

We'll see what the new coaches will be able to do with them. I should have been more specific and said tackle. I'm sure they will get some playing time but I don't think they are ready to start there. I think at best Brix is a RT and Taumua at guard. If Brix and Taumua aren't ready to play in year 3 they never will be and we might as well process them.
Donnie the Italian Poly? We'll see what the new coaches will be able to do with them. I should have been more specific and said tackle. I'm sure they will get some playing time but I don't think they are ready to start there. I think at best Brix is a RT and Taumua at guard.
Brix has played in 2 games the last 2 years 6 snaps at UTEP and 5 at Akron. Taumua played in 2 games this year 14 snaps at Houston Christian and 5 at Akron for reference. Like I said we'll have to see how the new coaches bring them along in the off-season.
Also have to see if any of those Poly guys hit the portal now that Donnie is gone.

Tech had boatloads of money in a window that was essentially uncapped. Seems ridiculous to compare this to what Rhule did, unless you are arguing Rhule took the wrong job. That line of bullshit is defeatist revisionist history for losers who couldn’t land the players they wanted or needed. TT rebuilt their entire offensive and defensive lines in the portal last year. Excuses are like assholes, everyone has one. Get it done Rhule.

TT also had one individual donor who was willing to wire millions of dollars within an hour's notice with few questions asked and no reservations about overpaying - which they do frequentlyTech had boatloads of money in a window that was essentially uncapped. But they spent a lot more before July 1 than anyone will have to spend this year.I’m talking about THIS YEAR. Rhule says he has the money to play with the big boys now. Show me.

When Tech was (and is) offerring kids they tell them, sign this contract right now and we'll wire you 30% or more by the end of business hours. Nobody else in the country is doing this because aside from maybe Phil Knight nobody has a donor that liquid and that involved. Cody Campbell is essentially an ATM for them. Huge advantage
They are also pretty open about enforcing clawbacks because they're frontloading deals so much.
It's important to keep in mind that all the cash we're paying recruits isn't in the bank
But they spent a lot more before July 1 than anyone will have to spend this year.
You don't have to care but it does matter. If Nebraska is offerring a conventional deal earned over time and a school currently in the playoffs is willing to frontload a larger deal, disbursing funds within 24 hours you should take that deal every time. Rich or poor that's still a better deal. Sounds like Nebraska is moving more toward the Tech model this year in structuring deals but based on the past few portal cycles i doubt they abandon their perceived values on certain players (rouse, marty brown, isiah world)All true. But you don’t come out and say I now have the money to play ball with the top dogs. And then leave holes in your roster and say “there just wasn’t the type of players we were looking for or needed”. That’s code for I got out recruited, outbid, out worked (or all 3) by somebody else.
He says he has the money now and I really don’t care if our funds aren’t as “liquid” as TT. And I don’t think most kids care either, if you sell them on our/their future and the money is guaranteed by contract most kids don’t care if they have to wait a couple months to get their 1st check. These kids aren’t poor anymore and desperate like some HS recruits of the past. Almost every single P4 transfer, 90+%, are coming from a place where they had a prior NIL contract. These kids don’t need 100k the day they sign. They need to believe you can get them to the playoffs and the NFL.
