Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule
***Rhule’s main takeaway from the Akron win was that Nebraska got the shutout even while emptying its bench midway through the third quarter. “The standard didn’t drop, and hopefully that gives them confidence.”
***Rhule noted that HCU has only allowed one third-down conversion this year and ranked among the top five in several defensive categories. He praised their offensive line and their skill on the perimeter on offense.
***Rhule said Nebraska held a recruiting camp at HCU and that he had a good relationship with their staff. “They know how to coach football. They’ve got excellent players.”
***Rhule said
Turner Corcoran played some at left tackle but also used him in a “jumbo 12” package to take advantage running duo off the edge. “He’s a prime candidate for that,” as Corcoran works his way back to 100 percent from his offseason surgery.
***Rhule said
Jacory Barney did a good job of making guys miss on punt returns, but the blocking could have been better to set up easier returns. “We just have a special, special guy in Jacory.” Rhule said NU did block well, including a couple of blocks where guys took their man “off the field” entirely.
***Rhule said “everything” is still new for
Heinrich Haarberg at tight end, “and he’s still getting used to it.” That said, Rhule thought Haarberg “really made a huge step for himself” with his blocking and playing TE overall.
***Rhule said
Luke Lindemeyer was “always going to be where he’s supposed to be” on offense. That’s allowed his skill to take off because he’s putting himself in a position to make plays. He called Lindenmeyer a perfect example of a player whose hard work is being rewarded because he “got better” over the years.
***Rhule said
Emmett Johnson was similar to Lindenmeyer that way. The gains he made this offseason, both physically and with his understanding of the offense, have played out over the first two games.
***Rhule said Nebraska should have had more rushing yards vs. Akron, but overall felt the offensive line “played really well.”
On NU keeping its ‘edge’ against an FCS opponent
***Rhule’s message this week was once again for his guys to prepare for the man in front of them. He said he laid into the Huskers at halftime for almost allowing Akron to make a field goal at the end of the half. “Where’s the killer instinct?”
He thinks Nebraska “did what we were supposed to do” in blowing out the Zips. Now the challenge was doing it again vs. a good FCS team. Rhule thought the team responded well in yesterday’s practice, but that must continue through the week.
***Adjusting to the first 11 a.m. kickoff doesn’t worry Rhule. He said NU was “an early-morning organization,” so the team should be ready to play on Saturday.
***Rhule said Nebraska “fell into the trap of looking at the ‘brand’ of our opponent” last year vs. Northern Cockeye. Coming off the high of the Colorado win, Rhule said that the UNI game kind of defined their season with inconsistent focus.
He thought NU did a much better job of having “an edge” going from the Cincinnati win in Kansas City to facing Akron. “We’re looking for competitive greatness.”
***Rhule said quarterback
TJ Lateef “didn’t look like a freshman to me… I thought that was real signs of life that he’s going to be ready.”
On Raiola, young defenders, and motivation from Bud Crawford
***Rhule praised
Dylan Raiola’s efficiency and ball security, especially with the volume of passes over the first two games. He said Raiola completed passes to 14 different receivers vs. Akron. That shows how well he’s seeing the field and understanding the offense.
***Rhule said playing so many true freshmen through the first two games spoke to how much NU rotates on defense. He said Georgia does the same thing. “We’re going to play the best players, and it’s because of the way we practice.”
Rhule highlighted guys like
Dawson Merritt and
Kade Pietrzak in that regard, but also others like
Vincent Shavers and others last season.
***He said
Malcolm Hartzog “got a little dinged up” against Akron, which allowed some young guys to get more snaps.
***Rhule said
DeShon Singleton being healthy and consistently practicing through a full offseason has allowed him to hit the ground running this year. Singleton could play man, deep, and help vs. the run, saying that was a separator from being a Day 3 draft pick to “early Day 2 or even Day 1.” Rhule said Singleton was significantly better in “coming downhill and striking” against the run vs. Akron.
***Rhule said one of Nebraska’s themes this week was the upcoming
Terence “Bud” Crawford fight on Saturday. “I think he’s a role model for all of us who are blessed to give back.”
Rhule said Crawford doesn’t worry about protecting his legacy because he wants to achieve greatness by winning a third weight class. “He doesn’t care what other people say because he’s a competitor and he wants to win… He’s the ultimate, ultimate competitor. That’s the analogy for our team.”
