Since Nebraska football is a flat circle and we will inevitably debate the same dumb shit, which coach had the worst starting position as NU HC? Explain your vote.

I think Riley inherited the most depleted roster plus most caustic group of players. Pelini did his best to pee in the already shallow talent pool before he left. Riley was forced to play Walk ONs on the O-Line the first 2 seasons as there was no talent or depth. I think his 2nd year he had 3 Walk On O-Linemen starting including a Freshman on the team that started out 8-0 ranked #8 in the country. Frost & Rhule had/will have the benefit of the Transfer Portal to re-stock a team quicker. Pelini inherited an ass load of talent. Heck there were 12 defensive players alone he inherited that played in the NFL including arguably the most dominant college D Linemen ever, Suh. Pelini did develop that talent but he walked into a gold mine of talent from Callahan.

It's Rhule without a close second. Both with what Frost left and what we're losing to the portal. That and you cannot discount having to flip the culture of a team that has not been to a bowl game since the 2016 season.

Rhule doesn’t have a single OL or DL that would play for a Dll school.

Riley probably had the most antagonism coming in, but that was a pretty solid starting point. Skill position talent was good. Two 3rd round picks on DL and 1 on OL. Plus Nate Gerry was a 2nd team AA the next season.

Its tough to say, because how much does coaching factor in? I know this might be triggering, but I'm gonna zag and say Frost. Only slightly compared to Rhule though, so hear me out guys, Im just hear for the debate. It was trash when Frost got it and also trash when Rhule got it, not trying to be a defender, just trying to have a good ole message board debate.

Defense - Frost is unquestionably worse IMO

The defense was turrible in 2017 and going into 2018. No linebackers to speak of, secondary was sparse, and the DL had some guys that would turn out to be okay, but they were built for the 4-3 compared to the 3-4. The were getting routinely ran over until about 2020

In comparison, I think Nebraska defense for next has the opportunity to be a solid defense.

Offense - Rhule is worse. But here is where I have trouble, does Martinez count as where Riley left it, because Frost picked him up. If we are running an offense with Andew Bunch and 175lb Gebbia how good is it? SAme with Mo Washington as he was a big weapon that year. RB - Ozigbo was an after thought going into 2018. Does get credit there? But we had a solid OL, 2 great WRs. Lacked a lot of depth though IMO.

Anyways, I think Nebraska should have been about 6-6 to 7-5 in 2018 if Frost was a competent coach.

Still a lot to be decided but I think Nebraska has the opportunity to go 6-6 to 8-4 next year. Maybe I'm crazy.

It’s funny how much bitching Frost did when he got here about the talent he had leftover, now it’s twice as bad for his replacement.
he inherited Morgan, Spielman, Ozigbo and a serviceable OL that made his offense work that first year, then proceeded to slowly downgrade at all of those positions over the next 4 years.

Ya pretty much lost me after the Linebacker claim. Frost ran off highly rated 4 Star LB Avery Roberts who was All PAC 12 1st Team 2 seasons at Oregon St and lead the PAC 12 in tackles 1 season.

Many of the comments are reason enough to temper expectations for year 1. You don’t miss a bowl for 6 years without having to make significant and drastic changes. And you don’t make wholesale changes as a college coach to be great in year 1 while possibly sacrificing long-term success to a degree.
I think Rhule is inheriting a shallow roster with a bunch of guys that haven’t even sniffed collegiate success, and likely don’t have a great understanding of how to achieve it yet.
I would say from worst to best rosters inherited:
Rhule
Riley/Frost is a coin flip
Pelini
